Best welding channel by miles. I've been doing this 37 years+ in the UK, a lot of our specs are different but most jobs use ASME codes currently welding structural tube 530mm od and 720mm of (21" 28") 7018hr4s laborious 10 pass 18mm fillets I know I could do it in 6 passes but we're not allowed? Somebody half my age who's never never held a pair of tongs in his life telling me how to do my job, such is life. I've a few tips for the youths starting out. 1. Get work pants with knee pads 2.keep your head/screen out of the smoke and learn to weld at at arms length 3.never jump of the job always climb down 4. Buy a couple rubber floor mats and make sure your always stood on them your entire working life... I know this because I did non of the above and I'm blind as a bat i have knackered ankles knees and hips oh and don't forget the bad feet.

I will never be a pipe welder. But I find this video valuable for the detail on the puddle dynamics. This information on technique is generalizable.

An ideal set up would be to have the gap wider on the top, so that when you get there its not after closing and you wont have to knife it with a slicing disc. I would use a slightly wider gap on larger dia pipe. the rod needs to breath especially at the bottom too tight and you end up turning your amperage up which will result in a concave bead. Its not as forging as lets say a 7010 electrode. I use the remote in one hand (small) with a magnet and slide it up the pipe as I travel. With this method you have instant power and when you are going into or out of a pickup it really helps. The ideal way to travel is just have a keyhole no more, too big it falls in too little nothing in the inside.

I'm not a welder or in the trades, but I still enjoy watching these. One question, if one were to be welding two long pipes together, how would they knock the slag off from the inside? 4:50 for example, wouldn't be able to do that if the pipes were longer?
Would designs require that pipes be bolted together every so often so you could reach it?
Would you just leave it?
Is it an unlikely scenario that the sections of pipe would be so long you couldn't reach it?
