Stick Welding Tips for a 4g Overhead Weld Test

preview_player
Показать описание
The 4g overhead welding test is often given along with the 3g vertical plate test. The same tips for the overhead weld test apply to pretty much any overhead stick welding.
Set amperage to hot enough that the rod wont stick even when you hold a tight arc.
then hold a tight arc.

I've been welding 50-plus years, and I still pick up goodies every time I watch one of your videos! THANK YOU !!! (I like to use an 8' 4awg stinger extention for vertical and overhead. It doesn't wear your arms out so quick!)

Also, having a clean/new lens helps a lot too. After doing overhead a while, the lens gets grimy/crusty, eventually making it hard to see. Made all the difference for me!

Thanks for these videos. I just passed the 7018 3g and 4g 1 inch structural steel test last week. With these videos and the help from my instructor it ended up being a breeze. Now I'm hoping to learn how to run 232 flux core so I can test for that in the near future.

I am an engineer and have a home shop and several welders. Watching these videos is so great for even those of us who are not career welders. Really great content and dialog.

Thanks Jody!!!

I can't begin to tell you how helpful your videos are. I've already done the flat test and passed my certification but I'm going back to another school to finish up the 3g/4g tests and start MIG/TIG as well. Keep them coming! :D

The names Wes. I have been watching you for 2 years have commented and learned from you and I owe you a debt of gratitude for my own success. I just graduated college at Loyalist College in Ontario Canada . 2 year Welding and Fabrication.
I achieved my CWB All position SMAW and I have a Flat MIG Ticket as well.
like you said it makes a big difference whether my kids will eat or not, and now I am raw goods looking to go and stick some stuff together. I knew next to nothing about Welding when I walked into college and my teachers are a mix of great backgrounds from a metallurgist and hot forge masters degree holder from india, to a woman theory teacher who has worked all over the earth in the military and aviation industries to mention a few, we have fabbers and mobile welders from the pipelines. I love everyone and the community on here that you attract is top class!
Thanks Bro!
ps: friggin tig finger rocks dude!! I have 2 small and 1 big and play with different setups. very worth it!!

Terrific video. I have major issues with overhead 7018. The main issue is that I'm blind in my left eye. The other problem is with stick angle and setup. I was always taught the straight stick as you showed at the beginning of this video. This setup made it very difficult for me to see the puddle and arc length because of the distance from my test piece. I will try this setup in the future. Thank you.

when I did mine I took the arm off tacked it to the table and laid on the floor and easily did the 4g in the most comfortable position possible...all sparks were going away from my didn't get burned, I was in a simple carhartt learned welding is about comfort...you cant always be in the most comfortable position but if you learn to put yourself in the most comfortable position possible for that weld you will never lay a bad weld.

Thanks to your viseo on 6G pipe test i was able to get enough information to take my 6G test and land the job! I failed the test but i had full pen on the root and the supervisor was impressed with the fact that I'd never ran on pipe befoe and did so well with the root. Keep the videos coming!

Jody, Great vid! Thank you.
I was welding under my truck and things were going OK. As you know there are flashes of light, smoke etc. I ended the pass but noticed that there was still some flickering/smoke going on. I flipped back my helmet and discovered that the rag in my breast pocket was burning along nicely!  A few pats and I put out the fire. Took the rag away too! LOL

Great job, as always. I wish I had these videos a few months ago when I was taking all of these tests. The video you did have out was massively useful in producing a passing plate. Thank you, sir!
