One of the most successful business models is the franchise, but it didn't originate with McDonald's. Sir Harold Evans, the author of They Made America, describes the remarkable story of a beauty salon that allowed hundreds of women to own their own businesses.

This kind of comes down to one's exact definition of "franchise". In terms of Art franchises, multiple stories set in the same continuity and/or involving the same characters dates back to at least ancient Greece with the various mythologies and different versions thereof. Not the same as a business franchise, but still a valid application of the word.

Thank you so much for a wonderful and inspiring story. Harper deserves recognition as the founder of the franchise method. It's good to see that Sir Harald Evans and Sunni Brown pay tribute to her in such a great way.

Nice to hear about Martha. Very inspiring story. But she couldn't have innovated the franchising concept if she was actually born in the 1850's and that's exactly when Isaac Singer was already franchising his upgraded sewing machine to the public.

Your drawing is good.
I believe franchise with strong brand can be popular because they succeed in differentiating their business and position their brand in the right market segment.

The illusion that everything's going to be ok, seems good enough to some people than actually fixing it themselves.

Look into the animator. She has a ted talk here called 'Doodler's unite'. It's very good!

Hey! Where's my 200 word post?
Sigh.
Will send it again, later.
I love knowing the history of the franchise. Very interesting.

The Christian Science connection is important. What the video left out is that Martha got her idea for franchising from seeing how Christian Science Reading Rooms operated - using literature purchased from The Mother Church in Boston but owned and operated by local congregations.

this video helps me understand the link often made between christianity and captialism.

Nice she made it almost a full 40 seconds before failing. It's "D-Back" not "D-Bat". The Arizona franchise isn't named the Diamondbats. Good job. Good effort.

most of the video is about Martha and other franchises. the actual bit about the birth of franchises is really short and all the way at the end of the video @ 4:12

What an inspirational and enlightening story! Though I find using the analogy of "burgers" (or any animal-flesh) to be inconsistent with the physical and spiritual health that Martha professed. We can live well and kindly on beautiful plants.
