I love how Fleetway and Archie kinda went out go their way to make other versions of Metal to be their own thing, as well as having the go Metal. The brotherhood of Metallix and Shard are such interesting concepts that I'd love to see more often.

IDW Metal Sonic is my favourite metal sonic because of the amount of depth he is given, especially after the first story arc and in the mini-story 'Reflections' which has some of the best art I have seen in the comics so far

There was actually another robot based on knuckles known as mecha knuckles that disguised itself as knuckles initially and even used his abilities till he was revealed for what he was and destroyed not long after.

I feel like Metal being used as a quick distraction works best. Like, he's so powerful that only Sonic can consistently beat him so if Metal were to cause chaos away from Eggman, Sonic would have to drop everything before Metal can do too much harm. This would give Eggman more time to do whatever without reducing Metal's threat

I remember ordering an older Sonic Archies comic from the back of one of the latest issues as a kid. It had a Mecha Sonic and Knuckles that were them transformed by Eggman into robots. Sadly, I left it at school one time and it got taken or thrown out :(

Considering Mecha Sonic's monoeye that is (somewhat) divided by a line in the center, and that it as an upgraded form defined as a "MkII", we can speculate that the design was partially inspired by the Zaku Mobile Suits from the Gundam franchise.
Also, side note, nice that you mentioned Super Mario Bros Z despite being unofficial content. If Mecha Sonic ever returns, I'd love to see its character being partially based on it.

I honestly would like a game where Metal Sonic acts as more of an assistant to Eggman rather than just another boss to defeat. He's unique in the sense that he has a personality, he's smarter than most robots (take Sonic Heroes for example, where he's able to trick the entire Sonic cast into doing what he planned), and more intimidating than most sentient robots created by Eggman (compare orbot or cubot to Metal Sonic and you'll see what I mean), so it's a shame most games only use him for boss fights.

Sonic the Comic is just so WEIRD. I grew up with the Archie Comics, which were also weird looking back pre-reboot (thanks Ken Penders) but yeah every time you talk about Sonic the Comic I'm like wtf
Edit: I'm glad you're getting accustomed to the Archie Comics. Honestly I don't even know if I could. I started reading them after the majority of the damage Penders had done and they got a little more streamlined, but still pre-reboot. Right around when they upgraded their paper quality tbh
