to anyone who was actually wondering, (and yes, putting paper and an egg against the mirror does actually show the egg) this is possible because when you look at a mirror, your vision bounces from the mirror at the same angle that you looked at, kind of like bouncing a ball against a wall. This means that the mirror doesn't know that the egg is there, but rather YOU know that it is there. People often forget that they're looking at the mirror at an angle when asking how the mirror knows that the egg is there, but that is why you can see the egg in the first place because that's how mirrors work.

edit: even I was wrong with this statement, apparently. you're vision doesn't bounce off of the mirror, but instead the light that is on the egg does. it's the same concept, so i don't think my mistake is too bad.
