What is in Spam? It is one of life’s greatest mysteries — a true puzzlement that has plagued any person with a pantry since it was introduced in 1937. This canned block of luncheon meat rose to prominence during the Great Depression and has been a cupboard staple ever since. A meat of questionable origin that takes on the shape of its container should not have been a hit, and yet here we are. There are even some hipster recipes that are devoted to turning Spam into haute cuisine. But, what is in it? In this video, we’ll reveal how Spam is really made.

I've been eating SPAM since the 60's and in 2002 I went to the Hormel Meat processing plant in Minnesota. Workers came out with a fresh tray of cubed SPAM every 5 minutes and I bought souvenirs!

My Step-Father was in the South Pacific during WWII and said he ate Spam for weeks on end. He couldn't stand the thought of it at all after that. As a gag, we would wrap up a can for his birthday or Christmas. We all got a kick out of that.

Had truckloads of these stuff growing up. Still alive and kicking. Back then, I couldn't afford much. A can of this stuff, eggs and some rice you got yourself decent meals for a couple of days.

As a Korean, I guarantee you that nobody in Korea thinks SPAM as a luxurious food or a "sign of respect."

I honestly thought Spam wasn't real as a kid, I saw it in a reality TV show once and thought it was
a made up brand for the show that played into the trope of "Canned food that's supposed to bring you
happiness is filled with a mystery meat that has a very dark secert to it" but then I saw it on the shelves
and was absolutely shocked.

I used to think SPAM translated as literally 'Spare Parts and Meat', so I thought it was like tongue and brain and offal my whole childhood, and I grew up in Honolulu where it's literally everywhere even the McDonalds here sells it. Knowing that it's basically just pork shoulder actually makes it way more appetizing again, and I'm comfortable eating it for the first time in decades.

Always cracks me up to see Spam gift sets in South Korea. It's a super casual thing in the USA. Everything is relative!

It makes a lot of sense that Spam has a factory over in S. Korea. Koreans absolutely LOVE IT!! They give it away as gifts - like as part of a gift basket that includes other things like fruit, candy etc. Korean "sushi" is called "Kimbap" and yes it's absolutely mixed in along with a number of other things (pickled radish, carrot strips, strips of fried egg and that fake crab stuff). It's delicious and it only cost about 2 or 3 bucks (in Canadian currency that is) when I lived there from 2002-2005.

I always thought spam was like a hotdog, a mix of different meats. Surprising to learn its only pork lmao

My nephew came to live with my wife and I for awhile. I witnessed that he loved Spam and had it almost every meal. I started eating with him more often. Soon, I was hooked on Spam myself. Cooked, cold, or straight out of the can at room temperature, I think it's definitely delicious 😋
