How Did Darth Maul Get His Tattoos?

Darth Maul's tattoos are certainly part of what makes this character so iconic. The explanation of how Maul got these Tattoos and what they mean differs significantly between legends and canon so make sure to let me know your favorite explanation down below. In canon, Maul received his Tattoos from his own mother as a baby. This was in line with the beliefs of the nightbrothers and night sisters, with almost all other night brother Zabraks such as Savage Oppress also showcasing similar markings. However, in legends, Mauls markings were not of dathomiri origin. They were in fact Sith Tattoos. Similar to Darth Krayt and Darth Talon, these tattoos were etched into Mauls skin by sidious himself. They were applied in a myriad of different painful ways, including through the use of Sith pincerbugs. According to Sith tradition, the painful markings solidified a member into the Sith Order.

For the longest time I just thought that that is how his race looks, with everyone having different patterns.

It doesn't make sense that the Sith would display obvious markings like that during the Rule of 2. It's too much of a risk.

Um Actually! In Legends, Maul's red pigment comes from being baptized in that green Ichor the Nightsisters use in thier spells. There are fan theories as to why it's red instead of yellow.
They did give him a few of the black tattoos as well. But most of those are Sith tattoos he got as he grew older.

I think i prefer canon as it explains others of the race

Just a heads up, he's not a zabrak, he's a dathomirain aka human, zabrak hybrids, that's why the women of his species look like humans even though female zabraks still have horns and stuff. So the women like asajj ventress look like humans while the men like maul of savage look like zabraks.😁

Legends makes more since since most of his race is yellow except the sith also his race is mostly sith anyways are strong with the dark side of the force

both, both is good. I mean its totally possible that he got some the tatoos from his mother, and some from darth sidious

Poggers as always! Always love to see one of George Lucas most interesting characters explained. Oh, and also like Tevin said, can we see some stuff on Darth Talon ? Very interesting character as well in the Star Wars universe.

I prefer it being a Dathomirian tradition.
