Maul was a Zabrak born on the planet dathomir to the leader of the night sister clan, mother Talazin. Talzin was a power hungry individual and sought to become the apprentice of Darth Sidious. While initially considering her, he realised that Maul would be far more loyal and useful to his plans, capturing the young Zabrak. After taking him under his wing, Maul would begin brainwashing him to hate the Jedi and training the young Zabrak in the art of the light saber. However he did not teach him many of the more advanced dark side powers to prevent him from becoming too powerful. Afterall, maul was simply a pawn in Palpatine's plans and was never meant to over throw the dark lord.

He wasn't just a pawn, Palpatine once told Vader in a canon comic that Dooku was just a pawn, but that Maul was a loss as he had the potential to become the greatest apprentice he could have had, besides Vader. The only reason he didn't teach him more in depth Darkside skills, is because Plagius found out that Sidious took a secret apprentice and was upset. He did, however, allow Palpatine to keep Maul, but only as an assassin as he was very proficient in lightsaber combat, but under the condition that he was forbidden from taking Maul's training any further than he already had.

Darth Maul could've went back to the Nightsisters, who apparently mastered the Dark Side way better than the Sith, and learn from them. That definitely would've made him more powerful.

Sorry if you've already done this question already, but how come the clones defeated the Jedi so easily during order 66. It seems quite odd that the Jedi being such a skilled group of fighters, and there being so many of them, that so few of them would've survived, especially when some of them were up against quite few clones

I'm pretty sure he was in Palpatines plans to take over the galaxy. This was before he really knew about Anakin Skywalker. Also Darth Plagueis was still alive at the time and would likely prevent Palpatine from training Maul if he sensed his increasing strength

Plaguis was alive when he was palpatines “apprentice” there for breaking the rule of 2 meaning he was a sith in everything but name

Um… that’s not how that happened? In the cannon book Darth Plagues, Sideous was visiting Dathomir for just a quick second, I think it was food or fuel or something, and a random Nightsister brought a baby Maul to Sideous saying he would be very useful to a sith; surprising Sideous that she knew he was a sith. Then she left Maul with Sideous and disappeared.

he was never meant to beat sidious, but he did manage to take the throne of Mandalore which alerted Sidious and became a rival to the dark lord himself for the Rule of two.

What really sucks is there was supposed to be a game ABOUT Darth Maul, in which we would play as him and go through the things he went through, such as his grueling training regiments, his pain and suffering. It never got released. Heck, I don't even think it made it to the final stages of production. It would have been fun thougj

Sidious plan was to rule with maul. It wasnt until he realized that anakin was his masters' (plegeus) illegitimate force child, that he found a better candidate the Maul. He also didn't teach Maul everything yet due to the rule of two and to create a false sense of loyalty to Plegeus. I think if Maul would have been successful Sidious would show him some things definitely not all his tricks as Sidious did not want Maul to overthrow him. But the fact that he feels that way shows how much he valued and respected Mauls force potential
