It’s nice to see this talked about, over remembering can truly be a curse

I remember when I was younger somewhere in grade school. And I read the Sherlock Holmes, and a quote from there has always stuck with me my whole life. "The mind is like an attic, you only have so much space and I'd rather not clutter it with boxes I have no use for"
It's important to organize your memory

I met a gentleman recently that said that he had turned alcoholic because of this. His memories were so vivid that he still relives every bad thing that has happened to him in his lifetime as a strongly as if it were happening again.I have an awful memory but … I guess that’s better than what that poor guy is going through.

Also sucks, when you remember what you don't want, but difficult to remember what you want.

I am one of those people. I remember every wrong, every slight, intentional or otherwise. It makes interpersonal relationships and trust extremely difficult. The worst part is I dont blame them. People have bad days, they carry over emotions from previous encounters and sometimes, like anyone else, I can just be annoying.

But even knowing that doesnt address remembering it.

Heard a woman that could remember exact days and what happened on any day you pointed too all the way to her 3rd bday. And she said it’s like her parents died just yesterday over and over cause she remembers them so vividly

I’m a super learner and I have an impeccable memory however I found most of it to be a curse and spent ten years shooting heroin till I learned how to be more selective with my memory and way more selective with what I actually spend time thinking about that was the most difficult I’m now sober

I think I suffer from over remembering. I get randomly hit with flashbacks of one liners said to me 5+ years ago numerous times a day, I remember how pages of textbooks looked from when I was in my first year in school (I was 4-5 years old). I can also replay 15+ year old situations in my mind that meant nothing but they're so vivid like it was yesterday... I'm 22

2 of my high achieving children discovered they both had an ocd type of behavior at early teen years. Constantly re reading any signs, tshirts, etc. multiple times. Interesting discussion between the two and solutions. One of them used the rubber band on wrist technique. The other didn’t say. He probably fits on the spectrum. Anyway, don’t despair.

I have always had a terrible memory. I used to say as a joke, “my brain just filters out useless information” but the thing is I forget a lot of important stuff too which can make life a challenge sometimes.

*What is really painful is losing control and letting bad memories surface when you want to be selective.*

I'm going to use this forever as an excuse for my shitty memory.

As someone who has an extreme memory I will agree with this. I Can tell you all sort of useless phone numbers from 3rd grade, quote every movie I've ever seen, meet someone once and recognize them 8 years later.
It's a blessing and a curse. You definitely have to hone your talent

For a lawyer having a great memory is a tremendous advantage.

TBI Thriver here, had to teach/challenge myself to figure out how to create memories, predominantly short term. It was all about challenging myself, repetition and muscle memory, writing stuff down.

I have adopted the method of compartmentalization of my activities – due to the fact that I do design work, which I enjoy very much – and it takes many years. It may many days sometimes to get with a fantastic idea, but you get obsessed at some point your mind gets taken over by this idea and all the elements you need to put together to make it work… And once I complete that even before I completed, I can I choose a time when I can. I don’t think about it literally lock this whole process for a brief period of time or that’s an hour or a day or even two days I simply avoid thinking of the project of the idea and that helps me balance, my intentions in my my life because this way I can purify the ideas but I don’t have to be obsessed with them. I hope I explained it correctly and yes, I do have a great memory and that you can’t cannot have a great memory for a designer or an artist

My brain is so weird, it forgets useful things and remembers worthless things.

I've always recalled events from my childhood that my older brothers don't remember, but I've aways found it weird that I have memories from when I was so little
