Why Stupid People Think They Are Smart

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive distortion whereby individuals with little expertise in a field tend to overestimate their skills by mistakenly self-assessing themselves as experts in that field, while, on the other hand, truly competent people tend to belittle or underestimate their skills and their own real competence. Furthermore, incompetent people are often extremely opinionated.
In this video we will see why this happens.

When I was a child I was terrified of Freddy Krueger…. As an adult I am much more terrified of Dunning Kruger 😂

1. On the corporate ladder confidence often brings bigger rewards than competence - stupidity not being a barrier to promotion.
2. Academic prowess does not negate stupidity.

The problem with ignorant people are that they don't know they're ignorant, because they are, in fact, ignorant.

Sad thing is we elect and elevate such people.

Theres an old Japanese proverb. "If you know everything, you're miss-informed". My personal experience is that the more I know and learn is the more I realise, I dont know.

I guess it's like people who have dementia forget that they have dementia.

Real intelligence is knowing what you don't know. But people would rather make things up than admit that.

The irony is that this phenomenon is now so well-known that stupid people accuse anyone who disagrees with them of being subject to the Dunning-Kruger effect.

The Dunning-Kruger effect appears to have much to do with the mental disorder known as narcissism.... as narcissists will never admit they are wrong and believe they are superior to everyone they meet in every imaginable way.

The Dunning Krueger effect is the rule at my job. Promote people based on a profile that does not include experience nor intellect, physical appearance will suffice. The people in charge just assume that other employees that do know what to do will do it giving the impression all is well. Management thinks all is well and the incompetent manager thinks he or she is effective because they are too stupid to know otherwise. It's a downward spiral, I'm glad I'm almost retired.

I have a coworker who is a know it all. One time she was explaining something and I threw in a random fact about the thing, but it was a total lie. My coworker says "yes, I was just about to bring up that point." And she went on blabbing about the thing. I was flabbergasted! Not really thought, because I know she's also a pathological liar!

My late ex-mother in law used to boast about being good at some things. But she was just about the stupidest person I ever had to deal with on a regular basis. She was also emotionally underdeveloped. When my daughter was 10 years old, I realized she was more mature that her 83 year old grandmother had ever been.

Experience tells me that the Dunning-Kruger effect also applies to shallow people. They are so shallow and inauthentic that they are too shallow to even realise they are shallow.
