Pro tip, use both. Ive had the tic tester save me multiple times. If the ground and neutral wires are broken/ pulled out of wire nuts in the box, the multimeter won't help you. The tic tester will still show a hot conductor without a neutral or ground. Get both and use both.
In a perfect world everything is neatly organized in a nice new box. The reality is that most of the time you're dealing with a rats nest, electrical tape everywhere, wire nuts buried in walls out of sight, etc. Just because everything look's connected in the box doesn't mean it actually is. Just get a "pro grade" tic tester and use it in combination with a multimeter.

I disagree. tic tracers definitely have value. They aren’t a replacement for a meter by any stretch but there are times when it’s just easier to use a tic and times when you need a meter.

I use my dummy stick everyday on the job. If it rings then something has voltage probably. As an electrician I work everything as if it were hot, just good practice.

Use both. The biggest electrical company *and* the biggest GC I've worked for requires tic testers. You just have to know their limitations.

I carry a ticker everyday and it's just fine. When your buddy is flicking switchs in the panel it's perfect. I have a fluke in my bag that does everything else

I think the “chicken sticks” have their purpose. I was once fooled by a meter that had a test lead come loose directly after I ohmed to zero. Read no volts and I proceeded only to get a mild shock. Ever since I’ve use a meter and “chicken stick” to do a double test.

Remember testing line to load voltage on a closed switch will read 0 volts. But you will still have line voltage if the circuit is still on. Check from line to ground and load to ground to verify voltage at a switch!

Also remember if you're getting zero it may not mean the power is 100% off. If you're testing between two points that are live but have no potential between them, you could still be in trouble if you touch it while grounded

They are amazingly useful. Always keep it in my toolbag. Nice little flashlight.

The pecker checkers are definitely needed. I can carry one all day to easily identity when a circuit is being shut off, and i can easily check if something is hot. I've been using one for about 7 years now and never had an issue. If i need to know more information I'll grab my meter but I'm not going to carry it all day.

I love the volt sticks for quick troubleshooting, but I really only use them on something it’s already been proven to work with.
I’ve never had the fluke stick lie to me on a normal 120v outlet, as long as the probe can fit in there.

I went through 3 Klein NC AC testers. They’re garbage… or at least they were 10-15 years ago. Button sometimes worked, sometimes it was actually off and I’d get lit.
Get the glowing tip ones with no on/off buttons wholesale houses have. Walters in SoCal have good ones.
Check it once a week on known live circuits to test batteries. I’ve never had a problem since trashing the Klein ones.

I won’t be without a tic tester, they are very valuable. Both a dvom and tic have their place. They are two different tools.

That's a good tester as long as you don't hit the hold button by accident. The red led will light if it is hot but the display will say zero. (I've used this tester almost everyday for years.)

Buy a fluke one. They’ve never steered me wrong

😂 No need to pull up the whole meter to see if something's hot... If you buy a quality Tic they work just fine.. Just test them on a known hot circuit

I have that exact fluke t5- 600 for over 6 or 7 yrs never had to change the battery since I’ve got it and I’ve left it on at times I call it the magic meter😂 with the batteries that never dies. It’s the go to meter for sure Ty Electrician -U Rock but I also use the pen tester it’s helped in plenty of quick scenarios when I didn’t have my meter. Always carry my pen tester

You could have an open neutral.... be careful, Sir. Don't get dead! I always use a hot stick in conjunction with a multi meter.

Were required to have both and a plug tester but pretty much everyone just uses the hot stick. The only times we use the meter is after adding outlets and such to make sure its got right voltage.
