Losing My Hair! Testosterone and Hair Loss

A common question I am asked is, will I lose my hair if I take testosterone? Hair loss and balding is a common worry for trans men who take testosterone as part of their gender transition. In this video, I answer the question of the effects of testosterone and balding and discuss whether there are ways to reduce or reverse hair loss. In the final part of the video, I talk about why losing your hair is so difficult to deal with when you are trans. I discuss the process of coming to terms with losses, such as hair loss, as part of going through gender transition.

*note* - I say in the video that it isn't taking testosterone that causes hair loss, I do realise that it is DHT in testosterone which causes hair loss, but what I mean by this is that it isn't going through gender transition in itself which causes hair loss, the studies on whether trans men are more likely to lose their hair than cis men is not conclusive. It's being male that causes hair loss, and as trans men, we have always been male, we were just lacking in testosterone. Now we have it, we are as vulnerable as any cis gender man is, to hair loss. Hope that clears things up!

Shielding my hair from sun heat, using scalp massager as well as using litttllextra cocoonionn shampoo with hair oil have now played important roles in managing my hair fall. It is just 4 more months now and my hair fall is reduced by over 80 percent.

I'm a 23yo trans woman and before starting HRT my hair line had started moving back. Thankfully it moved back forward after starting HRT at 22. It was interesting to hear the experience from people going the other way! I think your hairline really suits you btw!

Thanks so much for this video! I've experienced some severe hair loss and thinning in the past 6 months and it's been kicking my arse mentally. I really needed to hear this, it honestly made my day, especially because I share all the thoughts about hair loss at an adult age (I'm 30) that you've perfectly put into words.

Damn, this video really helped me. I'm 24, 4 months on T and never happier. I never thought that overall mood and behavioural happiness was possible. I've never felt more "right" in my life before.
But I am overly worried about losing my hair.
I was like you, my hair has been outrageously thick since childhood, I've got so many compliments about it. This combined with being from a family of mostly women, and so I've started to associate hair with beauty. Thick, "perfect" hair is so overly valued by Hollywood and the media, it distorts perceptions of typical natural beauty, for both men AND women. Of course balding is more of a problem for men because of that whole DHT thing, but still.
As soon as I started T I felt textural differences in my head hair, which made me freak out about turning "ugly". I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but I even started to consider getting off testosterone despite waiting for it since I came out at 16.

I plan on getting a 23 and Me Health kit for a few reasons-- my mother is adopted so we don't know the genetic health risks on her side of the family, and I'm unsure if I have the bald spot / premature thinning genes. Knowledge is power, etc etc.

A lot of trans guys I've seen have started Finasteride and got results as you described (no thanks!).
I've also heard Minox/Rogaine works to retain hair AND grow beards without crazy hormonal issues, so at the most I'm going to try that on my head and facial hair until I can grow out a proper beard and then let my head hair do whatever the hell it's gonna do naturally (or maybe even just shave my head and be done with it!).

This was the first bit of advice that really helped me embrace the idea of this being a "male" thing that all guys deal with, and even made me smile and understand how affirming all this is. You told the truth without hiding from it. I'm honestly more excited to see where my hair goes from here. Thank you so much.

Thank you for an honest video about this topic. Next year in February I've been on t for 5 years and I am losing hair on top of my head. I wasn't really too worried about it in the start bc I had super thick and wavy hair . I went to my hairdresser (probably 2 year or so )
It was my hairdresser who asked me if I had lost a lot of hair lately, she told me my hair was thin. And that's when it really hit me, bc first I thought it was probably my imagination.
It's hard to accept.
Ever since childhood people used to say how gorgeous my hair was.
Now it's pretty much lifeless...on the top at least.. I can see the scalp which is terrifying....and sad. I miss my hair lol
The only place my hair still is super thick and wavy is in the back .

BUT if I had to choose I would still choose testosterone.

I’m 29 and 2 years on T.. my hair is already thinning so fast and my hair line has receded so aggressively just in the last six months. It freaks me out so much. Thanks for talking about this. Just watching this made me feel better about it.

What seems crazy is that FTM balding seems to happen pretty quickly compared to most of regular men. How long after you started T, you started to see thinning ?

I think the grey sides you have are super hot look! I've always liked that look on men. My hair has always been thin and baby fine and now the hairline has changed so much that I no longer have a widow's peak
I loved that bit of my hair but I'm not too worried about losing it. It'll happen at some point and I'll just start shaving it down to the skin. Now that my facial hair is really starting to be noticeable, I can shave my head and not feel too dysphoric about not passing.

You can take dht blockers that will prevent hair loss. It won’t reverse it but it’ll prevent the loss of hair when starting TRT.

My ex-boyfriend, a trans man, used Minoxodil to grow a beard. He was impatient about the changes being too slow on T, so he took the quicker route. It worked really well, but I have no idea if it works to permanently re-grow hair

You know what sucks more. Going bald as a trans woman before transitioning. After a certain point not even a hair transplant can save it.

Should I be worried about hair loss when starting T, I can't remember how my grandparents hair were but my dad is 59, but still has good guality (short) hair, haven't noticed baldness in him. My mom has a bit excessive hair growth (she has bit if beard. Girl trade with me-) I have noticed I've got stomach hair line and slight bit of peach fuzz on my lip area, haven't started T yet

I started to lose my hair at one year on T when I was around 20-21, but I actually didn't mind it that much because it made me look older. I like my receding hairline because it makes me look very masculine :)

But stuff you can do is hair transplants? I heard they're very expensive but they work I guess. Also minoxidil should work too, but I haven't tried any of that since I don't mind it xD Having to wear a hat out in the sun to avoid sunburn is a new experience though lol

From looking at my family tree everyone had their hair until they died but I'm only 19 and going bald. I don't have a problem with my hairline since it's so masc but the top of my head worries me. I'm thinking about trying minoxidil like Rogaine because of it. I know I signed up for this but the fact I'm so young just makes it hit so much harder.

I'm a few years younger than you and I have a huge bald spot. Small price to pay for transitioning if you ask me. I kind of laughed when they told me I might go bald - I'm in the wrong freaking body and you expect me to be worried about hair? lol. Bandanas are the best solution -there's a reason why pirates wore them.

Hey Fin, I'm 33 and have pattern baldness in my family. However, I've been on treatment called Finasteride for the past 8 years. There are also similar products called ProCar/Finpecia. I'm probably baldning now at a 10% rate than what I should have. I've had no side - effects as yet and enjoying good health. It's an option to explore but please do consult your doctor first. Thanks for a great video!!

I'm in school for cosmetology and this makes me sad, I know it's hard to avoid it but my dad is balding and I'm scared I will too

I am 20 years old and started losing my hair at 19. I have been looking into hair transplants. Do you think that is a good option?

See I’m only 20 and this worries me because I haven’t started T but I already have a typical masculine hairline and it’s already quite bad so I’m worried about it getting worse

I suffered from hypogonadism due to problems with pituitary gland, only testosterone I had was produced from adrenal gland, before I started trt my I had full head of strong hair, after 3 month of trt my head is oily, it shed hair and it produces dandruff, testosterone kills hair brutally
