In this week’s episode, we discuss 5 on-location landscape photography mistakes and how to fix them. The most popular video I've ever created, with almost one million views, is all about beginner landscape photography mistakes to avoid, but one thing that this video doesn't mention has to do with what to do if you've made a mistake in the field and it's too late to avoid? Do you just scrap the photos and hope to one day return to the location or is there a way to save the images from your trip? The short answer is yes, many times you can fix the majority of these mistakes, depending on the severity of course. In this video, we discuss how you can fix many beginner photography mistakes with a bit of creative photo editing in order to save the photos from your recent trip. I hope you enjoy this week's episode and are able to pick up some helpful editing tips that you can apply the next time you make a mistake while on-location. Thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

QUICK QUESTION: Ever had the invisible tripod leg appear in your photos?!?

When using transform, keep in mind that the image quality will be altered. In the example in the video, the vertical transform is quite drastic, with the bottom pixels being compressed and the top ones stretched. Stretching pixels is by far the worst because it will make those areas less sharp. Compressing will alter the image in a much less noticeable way, if at all.
One way to correct it, at least to some extent, is to scale down the image using the "Scale" slider right there in transform, bringing back stretched pixels (in this case, at the top of the image) to roughly their original size (check how much stretching is acceptable while scaling down).
Also, part of the image is pushed out of the frame when transforming, so this scaling down as well as X offset/Y offset can bring back more of the image content into view.

Captured the tripod leg ALMOST a few days ago, but realized it last minute after setting everything up and fine tuning... for the horizon correction, I always use the tool of the ruler icon

Love your old tech that you add on your desk in your videos. Had to laugh with the flip phone you had in a previous video

Very good tips Mark, I would suggest one thing - when you cloned out the tripod leg, from my experience, it would be much easier if you made the clone tool wide as the leg as it would make the section more pleasing to the eye and wont be noticeable as the big section. It is something that worked for me 😄. Greetings from Montenegro

As usual, this was an awesome FIXTHEM tutorial. All your tips work on my non-Adobe photo editing software. I pretty much faced all of these situations and knew how to fix them but it always feels better to see I am not the only one making these mistakes. Thank you for sharing.

Guilty in capturing the tripod leg! Love all your videos and learnt something new in editing the added noise from high ISO. Great Thanks.

Hi Mark, great idea to take the noise out first, then add sharpening .. . every day's a school day!

Great video as always Mark! One thing regarding the transform tool to correct your image. If it makes you crop out too much of the photo, try the content-aware fill in Photoshop! If there are important details near the edge of your composition, content-aware fill could help you salvage them.

Thank you Mark ~ Very helpful when you show two methods to solve the problem, i.e. here's how some people - - - and then here's what I like to do!! Really clarifies the solution. Also, with all the improvements in processing, (I use another program), looks like we now have an entire new supply of photos (old ones) to work on & improve. Great Winter filler!! Great job - Tks.

I've been using LR for a few years and I STILL learned something new from this video with the horizon line tool. One idea for a video (if you haven't done any videos on it already) is the tone curve tool in Lightroom. Is there a difference between using the tone curve tool versus just using the tone sliders?

Hi Mark, only a week ago I was shooting an Autumn scene in the local woods with a wide-angle lens, and back in LrC I came across the issue you described. I did not notice it at the time but only back at the ranch. I'm going back into LrC and shall apply your method of correction and see how I go. Top drawer advice and tutorials as ever. A helpful video for me 👍.
