In this week’s episode, we discuss the 5 worst editing mistakes in landscape photography. When it comes to landscape photography I think there’s two categories of mistakes, first you have your on-location and in-field mistakes and then you have your post processing and photo editing mistakes. I’ve always found on-location mistakes much easier to resolve as opposed to photo editing mistakes as post processing is a very subjective thing and it’s often hard to see mistakes in your own photo editing workflow.

In this video, I review the five photo editing mistakes that have been negatively impacting my landscape photography for the past couple of years. I’ve found these five mistakes to be the hardest for me personally to resolve for various different reasons. Some of these editing mistakes are caused by laziness when it comes to my own post processing workflow and others have to do with the fact that I struggle with identifying when I’m committing these mistakes. Much like anything, being able to identify your mistakes is critical in order to resolve them and I’ve found that’s often the hardest part.

I’m sure everyone’s list of photo editing mistakes is a bit different than mine, but I hope that some of my editing struggles and resolutions I’m using to fix these mistakes will help you with any issues you may be having related to your landscape photo editing workflow.

If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.

Thanks for watching everyone!

"Shadows are meant to be dark..."
Someone who gets it! Thank you....I need to hear things like that once in a while so I know I'm not crazy :)

Over-editing is my favorite way to screw up an image. Certain sliders are like candy I cant resist: sharpness, saturation, brightness, vibrance, clarity, contrast. I can often jack up a dull image by diddling with them, but the result can look phony. Just as bad as phony is "predictable." Some photographers do the same thing to each image: brightness down, shadows up, clarity up, vibrance up. When I find myself doing the same thing to each image, I know I'm in a rut. I need to stand back and let the image tell me what it needs from editing, and usually the less I do, the better it ends up.

I'm addicted to under exposure. It just adds so much drama but then I find when I print photographs they are too dark because they aren't backlit like on screens

Hey Mark. For me, this encapsulates what makes your best videos so good. You target very specific aspects of capture or post-processing and then show both sides of the coin: in this case seeing the RAW image and/or the edit you DIDN’T end up using and why makes the aspects of the final edit that really work so much more obvious (and thus the lesson all the more useful). Thanks man!

Love your videos, because they are real, and quite practical, but not a tutorial. Most of the youtubers talk about "do this, do that", you actually give good advices and some topic to think about. Many thanks Mark!

I love your teaching style, very clear and engaging. Your delivery is personable and relatable which to me goes a way! I've definitely been watching your videos a lot, some of them I've watched a few times! Keep the great content coming!

You are still the best teacher. Anyone not afraid to admit there own mistakes is sending a very good lesson. My weakness is the correct color. Never can get the color yellow correct. Never like it when I am done processing an image. Have a great year, Mark. Bill.

Good points, Mark - once again! I'll definitely try the toggle-between-two-edits approach as it seems to me to be a relatively simple and effective way of having a different perspective to one's work. Thanks!

Another great video, Mark. Thanks. I also have to say, I love your office setup! All the interesting stuff on the shelves in the background are perfect. And somehow I just noticed you mix up the stuff on the foreground desk. Love the Walkman in this one!

It is soooo incredibly easy to over-edit images. I am very fond of photographing Autumn colors. I get home from a "shoot" and immediately sit at my desk and start editing all those beautiful colors. I am so proud of my photos. Then I come back a few days later to view them and it's, "Whoa, WTF was I thinking !!! I have learned to walk away for a bit before deciding that my edits are complete. Happy New Year, Mark.

I can relate to most of these errors, editing is tough.

Fantastic advice....all of it. Thank you.
Decades ago, shooting film, I began following, and still follow consistently, my favorite piece of viewfinder wisdom.
When composing, pay close attention to everything you don’t want in the image. This practice has saved me a tremendous amount of time in editing.

I seem to struggle with cropping a lot. Sometimes, of course, it is easy, just getting rid of things around the edges, etc. What I have trouble with is seeing the "picture inside the picture", that part of the photo that is so much better than the whole. Thanks, as always.

Great Video Mark... and great tips... I am also guilty of over editing my images but over time I have
Pulled back on my edits and now I am much happier with the results .. my Biggest mistake was the Saturation slider... I will say I have been editing photos for quite sometime. What I have learned is there is always room for improvement. That’s what I love about Photography... Do what you Love to do... and always learning along the way....Great content Mark !

Mark, spot on as usual. As a beginning photo taker and editor, the knowledge on Lightroom probably has more influence on my editing than anything else. I use the CC version which I think is a little underpowered from Classic. I watch you and others using LR and learn from you actions much more than my own. I'm learning much from you all. Your five hit a lot on what I struggle with, and your virtual copy is a clever idea I'm adopting into my struggling workflow. Thanks again for all you do and the feedback you provide. It's the encouragement that keeps us going! -Bud

Great video! For my own editing mistakes, I would have to add: 1) Over-sharpening, 2) White balance adjustment, and 3) Too much saturation.
