🔎 ABOUT DISCOVERING DARTMOOR 🔎

I'm Julian Baird, photographer and filmmaker from Devon and welcome to Discovering Dartmoor.

A few years ago I asked myself the questions, “What do I know about Dartmoor? What makes this place so unique?”

When I couldn’t answer those questions, I made a commitment to myself to not only see more of Dartmoor, but to learn more about it.

And from that commitment, Discovering Dartmoor was born, a 5 part video series where I explore and photograph 24 of Dartmoor's finest locations and speak to some of Dartmoor's most passionate ambassadors so I could find out for myself what makes Dartmoor so special.

It's been a great pleasure participating vicariously in this grand adventure, Julian! The amount of work you've put into this series is truly impressive, and it must be your personal tour de force, too. The breathtaking views featuring the ancient, rolling hills, whether set ablaze by the brilliant sun or windswept and sombre — they have that irresistible pull that resonates with nature enthusiasts and hikers of all ages and from all walks of life. I may be among the fringe minority that really enjoys the gloomier, colder days in the wilderness, where nature seems more stern and weather conditions inspire deep introspection... But then again it's an equally transformative experience to feel the warmth of the autumn sun on one's face after a chilly spell, to listen to the rustle of swaying grass and to watch clouds scurry across the expanse of the ever-changing sky. Good health is a prerequisite the importance of which cannot be stressed enough. But if that is on our side, and the circumstances in our life permitting, experiencing nature firsthand is worth every second. And, lastly, your series underscores two main advantages indirectly associated with photography: that initial spark of inspiration that makes you want to get up before sunrise and get to a beautiful location so you can try and capture some of its transient beauty, and the technical necessity to slow down as you prepare for the shoot: this alone often puts the mind at ease, elevating something which can be considered trivial picture-taking to a form of true, deeply invigorating meditation.

While this is technically the last episode in the series, I'm sure your journey will continue, Julian, with a great many adventures and joyful discoveries!

Well Julian. I’ve just finished this final episode. I’ve had to spend a few days in London catching up with family and this morning, after watching this, I just can’t wait to get back home. A fantastic end to the series and I’m left with the feeling of wanting more.
I haven’t yet had the courage to explore some of the higher tors which, might be easy for some of the more experienced walking folk, but for me it’s a big deal!!! This episode in particular has given me a bit more confidence to go and look - properly prepared of course!!

Thank you for your efforts and warmest congratulations on the achievement.

Fantastic series Julian really enjoyed being part of your adventure and discovery’s on Dartmoor. I’m down there myself next week and looking forward to exploring it again and probably will include some of your locations that I’ve not been to myself.

Anyone remember the Yes album called Tormato? Featuring Yes Tor?

So thats why Thurlestone on the South Coast of Devon is called Thurlestone. It has a rock near the beach with a hole in it
