Learning a foreign language requires constant exposure, practice, and consistency to be proficient. Plus, you gotta remember that once you no longer practice learning a foreign language those skills diminish. It’s a perishable skill that requires constant attention. Fantastic video Ruri 🤗

Great video! I've definitely experienced the frustration of forgetting a language after putting in so much effort to learn it. Your tips on preventing language loss are really helpful. I love the idea of immersing myself in the language through YouTube videos, audiobooks, and podcasts during my daily commute.

It needs to be said, this channel is growing pretty fast, and it deserves it. Your content is amazingly useful for me, especially 'cause I'm learning English with it, and at the same time it helps me a lot at school. Thanks a lot Ruri!

It isn't as simple as it seems, but fortunately, having a close Japanese friend has been incredibly helpful in my Japanese language journey.

I think language immersion is highly important. Many people talk about "how to learn a language on your own and be fluent, " but it is really hard and less efficient to learn a language on one's own because learning a language involves learning its culture. When I learned Japanese, German, and Italian, I think I was able to learn most effectively by going there and immersing into the culture. Great video!

Thank you so much! I know Japanese and English but don't use Japanese too often so this video will help me retain it.

The lack of voluntary exposure and immersion is why foreign language classes in schools are often completely useless at teaching languages. They do teach people grammar rules and a little bit of vocabulary, but unless the students are actively engaging with the language outside of the classroom, they will forget everything they learned within a few weeks of finishing the class. Immersion is so important that it's possible to forget your native language if you stop using it for long enough.

I’m currently learning Portuguese and have been in portugal putting my learning into practice🇵🇹
SO much easier when your environment is purely in the native language and your speaking with the locals! It’s tough but I think resilience and willingness to learn are up there with keys to longevity . As long as I’m learning something new each day and making progress then I feel I’ve accomplished something towards my end goal of being fluent☺️ Great video thank you!

You are right: immersion is key. And Youtube is great for that. A tutor is not always necessary, as there are lots of good materials on Youtube. Find materials made by native speakers. Tons of stuff are free. Read, listen, speak, repeat!🙂

It isn't necessary to talk with native speakers to learn a language, i learned english by myself. I used to read english novels, watch content in english and even my most textbooks are written in english and i haven't ever met a native speaker, i can understand everything still! Yss, immersion is quite important❤

Notes (take them with a grain of salt as they might not be 100% aligning with the content of the video)

1. Immerse yourself in the language as much as possible
- the more you repeat it, the better your neural connection
- Voluntary Exposure (For example: TV, Audiobooks, Podcasts, YouTube, Films)
- During commute >>>
- Summarize what you have learned in a couple of sentences
- Learning is about inputting and outputting

2. Start Speaking
- Speaking Practices
- Recalling your knowledge about that language
- Best if you have native speakers as friends

3. Start Reading
- no need to read hard books → anything you like to read
- try to find a story you already know for your first book
- expands your vocabulary and sentence structure

4. Start Writing
- Self-directed writing
- example: writing about a future trip without using the word “trip”
- you need a native speaker that corrects your writing
- otherwise your mistakes will multiply

Thank you for this informative video, Ruri!

I agree 100% with the content in this video. I am German and married to a Brazilian woman. When I met her 8 years ago I didn't speak a single word of Spanish or Portuguese. I didn't get any further with English either. Today I'm lying here in my hammock, reading Brazilian literature, fluently discussing, etc.
I can only strongly advise anyone interested in languages to listen to the country's traditional music 24 hours a day, every day. it helped me tremendously.
