Matyáš Pilin is going to speak about one of his biggest passions: languages. He has travelled through Estonia and Finland as well as hiked alone in the French mountains in order to immerse himself in the local culture and has attempted to learn many of the world’s most challenging languages such as Mandarin and Estonian. He's not only an excellent student but also a talented orator, which has led him to participate in an international debate at Yale university last year. Today, he wants to offer some insight on how to learn languages quickly and effectively and help us understand how polyglots manage to find the time and energy to learn so many languages in one lifetime.

“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.” – Flora Lewis
As a Spanish teacher with German and English proficiency, I totally agree with this.

The key principles:
1. Message: Try to understand the information by the context, you learn for real when you build the meaning of the words. That's exactly what we do when we are learning our mother tongue.
2. Importance: Make the target language important. The best way to do that is choosing the target language to do some important daily activities inspite of using your native language.
3. Observation: Listen more and more and more, as much as you can in order to perceive the vocabulary and the way the natives speak the language.
4. Comprehension: The more you comprehend, the more you learn. Don't worry about acumulating words, but comprehending them.

I am a native English speaker, and I am trying to learn German. It has been tough and the grammar, word genders, and pronunciation sometimes make me want to give up but these Inspirational TedTalks always inspire me to keep trying. Maybe one day I will be able to speak German.

I've been learning english since I was a kid. Playing videogames, listen to music, etc... I consider that my learning process has been slow, but I'm still learning and that's important. My dream is to travel, and be able to speak with native speakers some day. Thanks for all this motivation!

Language learning is easy if you're dedicated. I learned Arabic just by listening to it every day for 4 years straight. I'm now fluent in it and English is my first language. Anything is possible.

Watching movies and listening to music in the foreign language is really a great alternative to being inmersed in the culture when you can't travel!

I speak Arabic, English and French fluently.
I know how to read and write in Spanish and Italian.
I understand Turkish, Russian and Greek.
Now I am willing to learn Swedich, German and Chinese.
I was born in Tunisia and I can tell that what helped me learn these languages at only 23, is the fact that I live with languages and do like if they were my native ones. So I never mind watching a film in Turkish, seeing a cooking show in Italian, listening to Russian songs, reading articles for my researches in Spanich, asking for a greek sandwich in Greek and helping my French friends learn Arabic, my actual native language, so that they do the same.
