Happened to me twice.
Not the tour de France but just some stage races in the U.S.

Never never look back, keep pushing like they are on your back wheel even when you have 500 meter lead. These guys are all great riders to be riding at this level. Feel bad he took 3rd after all that work

It is cruel but it is the law : never look back, just give all you can until the finish line. no matter if they are close or not, look back will not make you ride faster and you can loose all your speed and position

Yes its cruel, the hardest sport. You can be in great form and one crash can ruin you, no other sport is harder and demands 5-7 hours of continuous effort.
