I met a woman once that could not afford the surgeries to have the excess skin removed after losing pretty much an entire person worth of weight. Her doctor put her in touch with the closest hospital with a burn unit and she was able to get her surgeries free by donating her skin for skin grafts. A woman who worked with her was saved at a different burn unit after her abusive ex boyfriend lit her on fire, she would have died if someone else had not donated their excess skin. There are ways for those who don't have the money to get those surgeries and it winds up helping the person who donates their skin as well as potentially helping many others.

I love how the insurance company is all like “ we KNOW she wants to kill herself because of this, but it’s purely cosmetic and nothing more😀”

I wish more doctors would work this hard to help people who need the smallest things to make them feel whole. The joy that women felt to have the extra skin removed was priceless. I know it's just a show but it still made me smile at the end.

It's so sad how people who lose weight are left with more work than with they started with. I've lost 60 pounds and still deal with that in my stomach!

Usually skin removal surgeries are covered when they're that extreme. That much excess skin, not only causes mental anguish, but actually causes physical problems. It's not a cut and dry as this makes it sound.

Dude this needs to be talked about so much more than it really is. Can not tell you how many horror stories my mom told me about her having to go through trying to get her insurance to pay for things that shouldn’t have even been questioned.

When you think about it, this kind of thing ends up being a moral priority for doctors. They have a duty to lie and manipulate the insurance system in these cases because the insurance system is itself immoral. They have no duties whatsoever to the insurance companies' bottom line, only to the care of their patients.

I know this is acting, but her laughter and smile at the end made me unbelievably happy.

I was 298 lbs at one time. Now I'm down to 197 lbs. I have the hanging skin etc too. My mom was trying to get the money saved up to get my skin removal done. I was currently in a bad car accident back on 25th of September and if it wasn't for my extra skin and some fat still left around my abdominal area, I would have been killed by the seat belt in that car. It gave me a new prospective about life. I told my mom I no longer need the skin removal done cause all that extra flesh saved my life. I'm happy just the way that I am. I'm made the way I am for a reason.

So my mom works in the medical industry and wording things for the insurance company is a big part of getting things accepted. You have to word things exactly right if you want it to be accepted, it’s ridiculous.

‘So I’ve got a patient bleeding to death from a gunshot wound… what can you do for her?’

‘Well, we can give you a Band-Aid.’

I know that sounds ridiculous, but so is the working logic of the American healthcare system! 🤦‍♀️

I'm very worried of being stuck in loose skin just like this woman if I manage to lose this weight... especially if I turn out to have a suspected condition that's treatable and I could end up losing weight rapidly. I'm 27 and I've never had a body I liked and the pride and joy of finally having a healthy weight would not be felt if my progress was covered by loose skin.

Even when fat I am OK with wearing shorts, dresses and showing my arms but having loose skin everywhere would be a nightmare because I'd want to cover up head to toe and I easily overheat.

Even though I'm Canadian and thus a lot of my medical stuff is covered by the government, skin removal surgery is not covered as its considered cosmetic unless the loose skin is so severe it makes walking difficult.

Whenever I would see someone who had excess skin on their body from weight loss, I would look at them with envy honestly. I’ve always struggled with my weight and I WISH I lost so much weight that all I had to worry about was something like this. These people are literally champions who achieved something so difficult for many who are overweight, and they deserve all the love and respect in the world.

I know a woman who got breast implants prescribed after her cancer. It really makes a huge difference and I hate the American healthcare system for what it does.

My dad was lucky enough to have his excess skin removed following his dramatic weight loss. (And he had a TON of it.) But one thing he always said to me growing up was that getting insurance to cover needed surgeries was about "wording things just right" and "knowing how to play the game." He said that the only reason he got several of his surgeries was because he knew how to make things sound just serious enough that insurance HAD to cover it but without actually lying.

My husband went from 584lbs to 250lbs. He has lots of loose skin. It would be amazing if he was able to get proper surgery to remove the parts that bother him so much! His arms need done. Not for me! For him!! Oh how I would love to see the joy on his face.
