'I Want To Lose Weight, But My Mom...'

Meet Terra Wilson from MTV's I Used to Be Fat, an overweight high school senior ready to change her life and lose weight before she goes to college. There's only one problem: her mom Janey.

Terra and her mom are very close. In fact, the main reason Terra is fat is because her mom is also overweight (and not interested in changing.) MTV sends a trainer in to help (which has its own problems) - and Terra is committed. The problem is - Terra is not getting any support from her mother and perhaps, Janey is sabotaging her on purpose. What we see on this episode can teach us a lot of lessons that we can use in our own weight loss journey.

The mother is terrified to see her daughter succeed in what she failed

My friends and I always eat burgers. In January, I started a diet and told them I would take a sandwich instead of a burger. They refused and asked what we could cook together to fit my diet.
When people care about you, they support you in your goals.

mothers holding their daughters back in any manner in life is so heartbreaking to see :((

My child was overweight. He’s an impulsive eater and it got bad over the last year. So our entire family committed to healthy eating and exercise. We also teach portion control and choosing food wisely. And the importance of exercise.

He’s lost almost 10 inches off his waist since. We’re not doing a calorie deficit, because he needs the calorie for exercise, but we’re all doing better.

I simply cannot imagine not caring about your child’s health.

When she said she's not sure how her *daughter's weight loss* will "affect" her, i immediately had no sympathy for Terra's mother

When she said near the end "It is not really a diet anymore. It's like a lifestyle", I gave a sigh of relief. That is truly how you lose weight and (more importantly) keep it off. I hope she is still doing well.

I imagine, the biggest issue is that they should've sent a cognitive behavioral therapist and/or a dietitian instead of a personal trainer.

23:55 Look at her face, she is SEETHING at how beautiful Tara is. She's clearly bitter that the daughter is attractive and she isn't.

You should check out 'It's Your Fault I'm Fat', which is a UK show that focuses on obese teens confronting enabling/sabotaging parents. The actual weight loss part is less extreme than MTV's methods and the more rational parents are encouraged to join their kid in losing weight themselves.

Terra’s so pretty, this just shows that weight doesn’t affect beauty.

Jealousy is a powerful emotion, deeply disturbing seeing a mother direct it at her own child. “If I can’t have it nobody can” type shit

The sister and dad are so sweet. I'm so glad the coach roped them in. The way her dad just casually suggests a salad with their meal is a great choice- the more normal this sort of thing is treated, the more it feels like a lifestyle change

My mother was just like this! Sabotaged diets, used emotional abuse and manipulation to force me to eat more, and used my weight as a means to viciously make fun of me. I'm not overweight anymore, and I also don't talk to my mother.

“I don’t know how it’s gonna affect me”

Letting your daughter be happy and healthy? Oh you poor thing…😡

Getting her under 200 pounds would have been a tough, but realistic goal. 140 is insane. And that "personal trainer" shows you how loose that title is, especially back then

Something like this happened to me with my ex wife. Went from 300 lbs to 190 lbs in under a year. The whole time she was eating bad, calling me names, scoffing anytime anyone said anything nice to me. At first I thought it was to keep me humble, but she never came around. I started acting and did very minor modeling and she hated all of it. She also struggled with weight, though not as extreme of a situation as I was, but that jealousy was beyond hurtful. She couldn't be proud or even happy for me.

As Terra implied at the end, sustainable weight is about changing one's lifestyle completely. Terra did a phenomenal job by keeping herself disciplined.
