How long does it actually take to learn how to surf...8 minutes, 1 day, 1 month? To answer this, I took my friend surfing for the first time. I wanted to see how long it would take a complete beginner to learn how to surf from scratch!

Catching white water is easy.. it's another game catching unbroken wave, turning left or right.. and doing turns (top and bottom, and all kinds of turn ) plus trying to get out when surf is big

I’m 55. Just started dating a Surfer (61 ). I haven’t been out to the beach the whole year. Anyways, he was willing to teach & I said ok. He had two 9 ft long boards. I’m 5’0. He started me off practicing paddling. Then, pushed me & I was able to stand up after 5 tries. I’ve not nose dived yet.
I’m not athletic, but semi fit. What helped me is basic home videos of: Billy Blank Boot camp, 30 minutes & HIT 5 minutes video 1-2/week ( cardio), basic back stretch in a snake position, child’s pose, Cat & Cow ( to relieve back pain from prolong 12 shifts nursing standing), and basic Belly dancing & Tahitian dancing ( home videos I picked ups during pandemic) helps me with core strength. In summary: every time before I try to catch a wave, I make sure that when I lay down that I’m balanced ( feet not hanging off the board, my listing is balanced). Also, I make sure that I push up in a snake position & then right foot first, then left foot). I’m working on popping up better. The waves in Jacksonville, FL are not very big, so good beginners for me. So, I’ve been surfing 5 times now & learning to catch the green waves. So, you’re never too old, but gosh I wish I started much younger & expose my children sooner. Many of the fantastic surfers are still killing it into their 70’s.
Btw, there are so many sports that can be learned even at any age: skiiing (46), Taekwondo(45), Scuba (46). Thanks to YouTube videos like yours & others. I was wise to watch a few tutorials that morning before my first lesson.

I'm 40 now...surfed on and off when I was in high school and my 20's but didn't get serious and focused on it until about 33. From 33 to 36 I exponentially got better. Just takes tons of motivation and focus.

To surf somewhat good it’s taken me about 2 years. Lots of help / patience from friends and videos like these all helped me.

Started in March... I'd estimate about 50hrs in the water so far.
I'm just starting to feel like I know how to catch waves and pop up pretty consistently in surf 3ft and under.
Definitely haven't even begun to figure out what to do once I'm up.

And I have some boardsport background. Very comfortable on a longboard/cruiser, can drop in on shorter skate ramps, can snowboard.

Hi love your vids and love the advice you are giving. I got one question to ask if you are willing to answer comment if you are willing. How do I practice maneuvers when I am not surfing?

Another excellent video!! I'm not fit but I am good at Flowboarding. Can carve comfortably and land a small Ollie. I'm 41, overweight female. I have a 10 foot foam 'magic' board. Do you think I could stand up in 18 waves? I know I won't learn as fast as this guy.

Such a great video! Question for you. I skate/surfskate goofy but surf natural. Is this fine? Or would you reccomend try change to goofy?

it took me just over a year on and off to pop up successfully multiple times in one session... and that session was only yesterday for me.

is it more difficult to pop-up if you can't do a pushup well?
