My line keeps getting tangled within the cartridge, which keeps it from auto feeding. Doesn't seem to matter how tightly or loosely I rewind that spool.

so you don't refill the original spool with line from the garage like other trimmers?

I think it works well if you keep it nice and long for cutting big patches of grass, but along edges with metal or other stuff in the way, you should keep it very short. That way it shouldn’t come undone on the inside of the cartridge.
