Ryobi Weed Wacker String Replacement - The EASY Way

Ryobi weed wacker instructions tell you to remove spool by unlocking the spool housing. This video shows how to replace the string on the Ryobi weed wacker without removing the spool.

Two viewers to Field Guide to DIY wrote in telling me you don't have to remove the spool. We tested and, sure enough, you don't.

Just wanted to say I had a meltdown trying to rethread our whacker and it was so stressful and terrible, but after watching your tutorials on both the “easy” and “traditional” way to rethread, it made everything so simple for me. Thank you so much for your instruction!

Thank you for correct in the video because I didn’t know how to change my feed line. I saw your video when you took the head off completely apart and I thought this is too much hassle to do that and then I start looking again another videos and I saw you again with a newer video about someone directing you and I thought that would be the easiest way, so thank you for any video, now I know how to do it so much easier and quicker

OMG!! I wasted over an hour struggling with that thing! I actually had a moment where I was wondering if just buying a new one was an option. My wife saw my frustration and suggested I see if YouTube had a video that could help.
Thank you for posting this, it was so clear and easy to follow, and was very helpful!

I never comment on how-to videos and I probably should. I HAVE to comment! First time restringing my Ryobi this summer and I forgot how. I’ve been trying to figure it out for 30 mins, broke down and opened YouTube… watched two other videos and was fiddling with it when yours came up on auto play… decided to try your way… WOW!!! It can be this easy?!?!?! THANK YOU!!! You saved me so much stress!!!! I’ll do it this way for life now! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

Life saver. I was doing it the other way all the time. I had read the instructions when I bought this thing, but then I forgot the lining up the arrows tips and could never figure out how to do it. Thanks.

I found that on my first string replacement that I could not get the string through the hole going straight through because it appeared to be blocked. Sure enough, there was still some string wound onto the spool but it had welded onto itself. So I removed that partial string and then started over replacing the string with the method that you showed here. Perfecto!

I'm going to remember this. I did it per the instructions and had to take it down to the shop to have the lower put back on the upper because I didn't have the hand strength to do it myself. Humiliating, but I learned something.

Thank you so much for posting this video. The string on my Ryobi 40v wacker just ended so this will be a welcome solution to replacing it 👍

I appreciate both videos of yours; I needed to learn the "wrong" way as I had some stings stuck inside and I had to open the head. Otherwise, I couldn't put strings in. Thanks a lot again.

ok figured it out and thank you for saving me hours of frustration! This method works great and I needed to swap out the thinner string that came with mine for more robust thicker sharper cutting string to demolish 200 feet of tall weeds.

I have owned a Ryobi 40V weed wacker for over a decade and it's always been a nightmare from Hell to change the strings. This method is 1, 000 times simpler, easier and time-saving.

THANK YOU for this video. My sister does not have a Ryobi Weed Wacker but she does have similar and she has to go to a neighbour to get him to take off the I cannot wait to tell her about this video, just in case it will work on her make and model!!! She has arthritis in her hands and has a problem with things like this. The sting always goes when there is no one around to help!!!😳
