Quill really is the heart of the team that connects them all together here. James Gunn went on record to say that Rocket is the true protagonist of the GOTG trilogy, and while that has some merit, the first two movies are really more about Peter Quill's journey and how he crosses paths with those unlikely hero rogues and barely convinces them all to work together - never knowing that these people would ultimately become his new family. And Rocket slowly but consistently get more and more development along the way until he finally becomes the new protagonist that Peter saw fit to be the leader of the Guardians in his place.

Quill is the first person to crack Rocket out of his stoic exterior, then Quill's father figure Yondu saw through Rocket's past and taught him to be a better person. Five years with Quill gone thanks to Thanos's snap forces Rocket to step up and become a more responsible person as he helps Nebula and the Avengers save the universe and bring his new family back. They both bring out the best in each other. All Guardian members do, really.

The fact that we can all appreciate this scene from the first Guardians almost ten years ago because of the third Guardians really is a testament to how well made all three of these films are

This scene hit back in 2014, but takes on a whole new depth after Guardians Vol. 3 when you realize just how true his drunken words were. Rocket was always my favorite, but WOW, his arc has been nothing short of heartrendingly tragic, believable, and ironically human. I'm gonna miss adventures with him.

You know, when Rocket says to Drax that "Everyone's got dead people!", it never even occurred to me that he just might be referring to himself considering we never actually knew his past. But now that we do, that line hits harder than ever.

I also remember when he was yelling at Drax when he brought Ronan to them and said that “Everyone’s got dead people, it’s no excuse to get everybody else dead along the way!” He said that because he remembered when Lylla died, he attacked the High Evolutionary, and doing so the High Evolutionary called his guards so Rocket inadvertently killed his friends when the guards fired at them.
