Sammy L. Davis is a Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient who served 19 years in the U.S. Army (1965–1984). He was deployed to South Vietnam in early 1967 as part of the 4th Artillery Regiment of the 9th Infantry Division. In the fall of that year, Davis's unit was attacked by approximately 1,500 NVA soldiers. He fought off the enemy by directly firing artillery at them. Despite being wounded, he continued to defend against the NVA and saved three wounded American soldiers. For his heroic actions, Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor the following year by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Years later, during the production of "Forrest Gump", Davis's actions inspired the depiction of how Forrest Gump received the Medal of Honor. To this day, Sammy Davis continues to travel and speak to troops, schools, and corporations. Thank you for your service, Sammy, and welcome home!
