IOC defends decision to allow boxers who failed gender tests to compete amid furore
Показать описание
The International Olympic Committee has defended its decision to allow two boxers who failed gender tests to compete at the Paris Olympics.
There has been global condemnation of the IOC, which has been accused of putting the safety of women at risk.
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif made waves during her first bout on Thursday after the first few punches left Italian Angela Carini visibly bloodied and fearing her nose had been broken, opting to pull out after just 46 seconds.
The IOC has conceded there are issues with the eligibility rules, but it will allow the boxers to keep fighting in Paris, arguing it would be “unfair” to change the rules after the competition has begun.
The governing body issued a four-page statement defending its decision, saying every person has “the right to practice sport without discrimination”.
