I use to be maintainance manager for 5 big motels. Every time i walked into the pool equipment room of one of the buildings i smelled gas despite ventilation. I used to always use a lighter to check for gas leaks. The pool and hot tub heaters were hooked up with aluminum flex. As soon as i touched a flame to one of the fittings on the first one THE WHOLE GAS LINE STARTED ON FIRE! Both were leaking the same. Just being in the same room as chlorine rotted away the aluminum.
I no longer use a lighter to find gas leaks. I relaced both flex lines with stainless.

I would be taping and doping fittings. Been in gas distribution along time. Most leaks. Dry dope. No tape

If you just put a test on the system with a gauge, you don’t have to walk around and check everything or worry if you missed something. It’s the only way you should be checking for leaks. That pen and soapy water are for finding a leak when you know there is one somewhere

Do you let a little gas leak out to test the tool is functioning before using it?

That little tester exceeded my expectations. Works great for 290a and 600a as well have found several leaks on commercial appliances with that cheap tool. Worth every penny heck buy 2 of em.

Make sure you turn the detector on away from any potential gas as this is essential to making it read properly. It’s the same with any gas detector

I’m assuming that it’s much like the electrical contactless so how do you confirm that it’s working before you depend on it? Do you open the gas line to make sure it works?

Is there no such thing as q tightness test in the states ? here in the uk each meter has a test nipple where you are able to detect any leaks present as the pressure will drop
