It's great to have the functional differences between stretching and rolling explained. I'd always thought they were mostly interchangeable, but it turns out the differences are quite distinct. Great video, Nate!

Excellent-information...clear, concise and I saw this clip I was a bit lazy about applying both techniques....(and recognized that the stretching was different than massage rolling....I have been very active at doing both over the past 6 month and have noted a significant gain in feeling better and not "hurting". I have not seen a "pace" improvement....but the fact that I am not hurting...is really key....(i am an old man am down loading your app and great stuff....and to the point....

I do something simple short, and easy before every workout after warmup. It has to be something simple and not too long for me where i will skip it or get bored with it or not want to do it. I just don't understand those circuit training stuff from other videos. Because they recommend you to do those during off days when your legs are resting to keep your cardio up. But alot of them are jumps which uses your legs alot and not resting your legs. I don't even think my gym has that rolling thing though.. It just has the medicine balls and bouncing balls you do sit ups on.

first time I rolled my quad it felt like my entire leg was fire, thought that was just how rolling felt.

Then I rolled an area that was less damaged, and it felt like nothing at all.

Thats when I knew..

Should you roll or stretch sore muscles? Say sore calves from speed workouts? In my experience foam-rolled sore muscles is even sorer the next morning, but maybe I should leave them alone altogether?

The difference between foam roller and regular stretching was good and helpful information. I sometimes experience a slight tightening around my lower back area after exercising. I had surgery (hysterectomy) a long time ago (during 1995) and my issue started after that, my question is what type of exercise would you recommend to strengthen that area? Would a foam roller help me?

If my upper knee hurts, I foam roll my quads and the pain is gone by the next day. Unsticking the fascia really works.
