Great advice for business owners but what if the situation was that the store said that there was a waiting list up front and a customer wanted a rush order? I have seen variations this situation before at a balloon store I worked for and my parents upholstery shop.

I feel like an update for what's going on would be enlightening - tough times make for tough moments, but we need to keep people in the loop to the best of our abilities. It didn't sound like he was in a hectic spot. I tend to do the work of 3 people where I'm currently employed, and am expected to still communicate with customers to the best of my ability, sometimes impossible when I have a line at the register, while other customers are coming into eat, but I do what I can. That should always be the aim, something as simple as "I'll be with everyone as soon as I can, I'm currently the only one up here right now." I am not asking the customers to "Bear with me" I'm instead explaining what is going on and that I am working as fast as I can. (I'm a host at a Restaurant for anyone wondering - and they have added on To Go orders as our responsibility including door dash, grub hub, and uber eats. In most places, a To Go employee is a completely different position hired to take care of customers in a different way.) - So if I can keep up with keeping others in the loop, I don't see how they were unable to after 40 minutes and what sounds like, that they were well staffed.
