I really don't like how they depicted Anubis here. It seems they have conflated his role with that of Ammut (The actual devourer), the hippo-lion-crocodile hybrid who devoured the hearts (and therefore that part of their souls) of those Anubis judged unworthy. Anubis simply weighed the hearts of those who entered the hall of judgement, he wasn't malicious and certainly did not devour any souls. Further, where Anubis is a god, Ammut is more of a beast or "demon", so it would actually make a lot more sense to have Ammut be the monster of this movie rather than Anubis: perhaps she could have somehow wandered out of the Duat and had to be imprisoned?
Sorry, but I had to rant when faced with how the film industry almost universally depicts gods of death as "evil" when in reality they most often were not. While, yes, it is a film and on paper it shouldn't matter, this screams of doing the bare minimum of research into a culture that should be approached with respect and care, especially with the seeming non-existence of Ammut, and can leave a sour taste of a real culture that some still venerate today in people's mouths.

While I could see Anubis being an entity who is punishing the scientists for desiccating the pyramid, as he his a guardian of the dead as well as a guide… I feel like they went down the Disney “Hades” route of making Anubis evil for no apparent reason. What is it about Gods of the Dead, that Hollywood’s gotta make them all evil?

I loved this movie. I understand why people criticize the CGI affects but I really wish the movie industry would come out with more movies that make you think and question how mysterious the universe is. Like Ex-machina, Jurassic Park, Aliens, anacondas, Rec 1 & 2. What happened to this type of storytelling?
