"Don't claim divine virtue when you're working for your own purposes" That is the best explanation Ive ever heard! I never unerstood it as the cussing interpretation. People who act "holier than thou" and better than everyone else because they are religious.

The Lord is truly using Dr. Peterson in a beautiful way to reach so many people. I know he doesn't identify as a Christian but I think he's close. And even though he isn't (yet), he has a really beautiful and profound understanding of the gospel message. This is a good example here, for me anyway, I've been a Christian all my life, went to a Catholic school and I've never heard an explanation of this commandment like this. I listened several times to let it sink in.

I was at a religious lady’s house the other day doing a remodeling job. We were talking to her and she kept talking about God, then mentioned the modern political moment and claimed that we should just “off” a few of the protestors and then ask for forgiveness.

Other than that she seemed like a nice lady but that took me by surprise LOL.

I’m not religious but it is funny how people will stand on a book thinking they are always right because of it. I’m all for holding strong to your beliefs, but at least be consistent.

Most morality in modern times is indeed just appearance and nothing more. People use the word God to appear to be above others. Replace God with I and it all starts making a lot more sense.

Religion doesn’t corrupt people it just emboldens what they already are.

Ive been saying this fie years! The Old Testament language is MARITAL in nature. God was tired of his nation whoring after foreign/false dieties while claiming to be His people. Taking His name in cain is like taking your husbands nane in marriage but continuing to sleep around. That's why YHVH was fed up with them! Yet He still loved them so much, He made a Way for them, and that "Way, " is Yeshua, His only begotten son. ❤🙏❤️

This is the way I came, on my own, to interpret this commandment. The worst way to use God's name is to take His name and live for yourself.

By those words, all the televangelists would go to hell.

Exactly, using the Lord's name in vain isn't just using his name as a curse word, but all forms of using his name for one's own vanities which is ultimately doing it from a place of the heart that is vain.

Kinda sorta...

Proverbs 30:8-9
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:

9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Lest I be poor and steal, and take the Lord's name in vain...

If I say God is my provider, Jehovah Jireh, but then I go and steal bcuz I don't have enough, I have taken His name in vain.

Making frivolous oaths or promises is a bad idea in general.
