Does anyone read this as a fourth wall break? It’s kind of a dark reading of the text, but is the mysterious cold forger mccarthy himself? A recluse “exiled from the fires of men” would be aptly mccarthy himself. Further, we know that portraits of men are not just mere representation from the judges earlier monologues. “Every man is tabernacled in every other” the judge says, and so a book true of one is true of all. The portrait the cold forger is engraving on the coin is the portrait of Man, and could be the book itself.

It would definitively answer some of the authors intent which is otherwise intentionally inscrutable
