The greatest book ever, becomes the greatest audiobook ever. Richard Poe should have won awards for this narration. I’ve read it so many times & listened to this so many times that I cannot separate the two 👌

Holden's "Moons, coins, men" speech has stuck with me for years and I'm don't even understand it in it's entirety. It is probably my favorite part of the book, even more so than his previous "War is God" monologue.

I think his piece about the length of one's tether is meant to represent one's influence over their respective environment.

To me Judge Holden represents the collective shadow of humanity; our innate, dark desire to dominate, destroy and control. He He exists fundamentally outside of time and space, existing ever-present in our own unconscious, he has always been, and will always be.

Manifest Destiny is simply another mask that he wears.

The audiobook of BM is a work of art in and of itself

I always thought the utter write-off of alien life was Holden's way of trying to avoid judgment. If humans are the only life in the universe, then our actions cannot be judged against anything else; our depravity cannot be measured against anything else. I think this scene ties in with the scene later with the old buffalo hunter who asks basically the same question, although in a more longing, repentant way. After slaughtering the bison to extinction, he judged his own actions, the very thing that Holden calls the kid out for doing.

Man has gone out to explore other worlds and other civilizations without having explored his own labyrinth of dark passages and secret chambers, and without finding what lies behind doorways that he himself has sealed.

Only the Judge could say that there are no men on other planets and sound crazy
