Do The Stoics Hate Fun? | Ryan Holiday | Stoic Thoughts #11

Stoicism is an ancient philosophy. Much of what we know of stoicism comes from the few writings of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus and others that survived them. Unfortunately, these are limited in scope and focus, so we don't get the whole picture of what these thinkers valued. We get snippets of the lessons they felt were valuable for their own improvement, but not much in terms of reflection on the good things in their lives. This explains why stoicism can sometimes come across as leaving no room for enjoyment, friendship, laughter, love, and all those things that make life worth living.

Daily Stoic is a community built around the teachings of Stoicism. If you're wondering "What is stoicism?", "Who was Marcus Aurelius?", "How to be a stoic?" or "What are the benefits of stoicism?" check out the Daily Stoic:

Stoicism is a practical philosophy. It’s built for action, not endless debate. The main thinkers that the Daily Stoic focuses on in stoicism are Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca. If anything Stoicism has made me love life even more. Learning and applying the lessons of Stoicism has been one of the greatest things I have done for myself!

For me, Stoicism is the furthest thing from a buzzkill; rather, I find it has made me markedly happier and (I hope) better to have around. Why? I no longer waste time being anxious about things I can't control, or bemoaning my lot when something goes wrong, or finding reasons to be unhappy with just about everything. Now I accept what I can't change, act decisively when I can change something, embrace the hardship that comes to me, and am grateful for what I have accomplished and continue to accomplish. Instead of being angry and anxious and unhappy, I'm content and able to extract far more good from life than I thought possible. Stoicism gives me the freedom of discipline and tranquility and honesty.

Everything we see is biased by our perception. This is a great reminder that we see everything through whichever lens is most important to us right in that moment of experience.

It's like saying engineers must hate music, cause you can't find lessons on music theories when reading an engineering book.

I find stoicism helps me with the difficult parts of my live my thinking, my emotions and my actions. I am not sure I need 2 thousand year old quotes to help me understand that good food and drink with friends and family is enjoyable, however stoicism helps me not over enjoy these things or let my life revolve around hedonistic pleasures.
