Tours, 732 – few places and dates ring so vividly in history. After the Umayyad conquest of Spain, the Emirs of Cordoba began probing the realm of the Franks. However, the Umayyads would come up against Charles Martel, the Hammer. Leading his battle-hardened Franks, Martel would face the mighty Umayyads at the legendary battle of Tours. In this documentary, we explore this incredible moment in medieval history.

This battle was called, "The Battle of the Highway of Martyrs" by the Arabs. It was a devastating blow.

Great discipline was shown by the Franks. That is what determined this outcome.

"Martel" stand for "Hammer" in Old French and Italian, well "Martello" in italian to be exact but it's pretty much the same

George rr Martin named house Martel after Charles Martel...even the hammer of the waters which caused the breaking of the arm of Dorne was based on Martel meaning hammer.

As an Arabic Muslim I want to thank you for your non-biased and accurate content.
It is rare these days to find a channel that tells the truth about history and your channel is one of the best 👍
This battle was as you described 100% according to Arabic resources and we call it “the battle of stoned martyrs “
Continue in this amazing content 👍

Love this channel! I take interest because it covers the history that TV or movies largely won’t go into. I was shocked they did “The King” the movie about Agincourt. My ancestors descend from Nibelungids or Charles Martels brother Childebrand I of Burgundy. Our line is not so popular as the Pippinids. It’s funny too how my line kind of laid low in the north in Vexin. It tells me you needed distance from central and southern France drama! Looking at records I realize how dangerous it was to be royal back in those days. Childebrand’s line that survives almost intact (same last name chosen and kept for 900 years) today emerged mainly from the Tyrrell’s of the UK and their French cousins the TyreI de Poix family members in France. The Tyrel De Poix use the Chateaux De Forges, they received in perpetuity after Agincourt as a bed and breakfast in Concremiers, France to this day! I’m sure there are a lot more descendants of this line but they may have a different last name. Our family is American but my mother’s last name was Terrell, the American version. Unfortunately not enough documentation survives for every generation but we live up to Nibelung’s nickname “The Historian” our line has kept up its own history and has societies in the US, UK, Australia etc..😎.

Ironically, the French knights were defeated there nearly 700 years later by the English archers @ "Tours" by Charlemagne's grandfather, ban Frankish King . The franks were of Germanic origin .
