In 732 the Armies of the Caliphate had conquered a territory that stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indus River. They crossed into Europe and quickly captured Spain. France was going to be the next battle ground. But at the Battle of Poitiers, the Islamic Conquest came to a dead stop as Charles Martel inflicted a massive defeat on them.

Just so you know, your videos are 100x better than most Nat Geo/History channel documentaries. No obnoxious repetitive one-liners or endless b-roll, just straightforward map presentation with sober yet dramatic chronological narration. Bravo, sir!

They certainly did return, in force. Five years later they invaded with armies by land and by sea. They took Avignon, Arles, and Nimes. Charles Martel had to come back and take them on, city by city. Then at the River Berre, he faced another giant Muslim army. He routed them and nearly annihilated them as they fled back to their ships. I think the Battle of the River Berre might have been as important as Tours.

The real significance of the battle was that the Muslims had no idea that beyond the Visigoths there was another great power, the Franks. Charles Martel had recognised the danger and formed and trained the first standing army in Europe, at least since Roman times. He was able to do this because the Franks were Catholic and he had the financial support of the Church. The other German tribes in France and Spain were Arian Christians who were at loggerheads with the Roman Church. Thus, Charles could pay his soldiers properly and they did not have to rush back to the farm to sow or reap in the appropriate season. This enabled them to train to march far and fast, so as to appear in front of Tours completely unexpectedly, and to stand firm in the face of heavy cavalry charges.

Muslim raiders also attacked Rome and the Vatican in late 800's until repulsed by coalition of catholic states including the papacy -walls of Rome were subsequently strengthened to prevent further attacks.Muslim raids on coastal towns throughout Italy, Spain and other areas continued for hundreds of years with many places having to be completely abandoned because of incessant raids.Raids later revived with the expanding Ottoman Empire.

I was born and raised in France. Went to school there until I was 18. We refer to this pivotal moment of French history as the Battle of Poitiers. Moussais, where the battle took place, is 20 km north of Poitiers. WE NEVER REFER TO IT AS THE BATTLE OF TOURS. There are indeed 2 battles of Poitiers.

Also, it is worth mentioning that not all the Arabs ("Maures" in Old French) crossed back to Spain after their defeat. Some liked the place, stayed and lived in the Poitou area: all family names like Morin or Morillon refers to people who have some Arabic ancestry from the 8th century.

This is basically a clip of a larger piece in the Reconquista Series which are also a good watch.

where did you get the detail? I read the phalanx stayed-put, and did not pursue the withdrawing Mohammadeans, they were ordered not to.

I suggest to change the white maps as they seem to be to complicated, simplicity is key

Why is this labeled the Battle of Poitiers (which took place centuries later) when it is in the Battle of Tours?

Was watching a clip on YouTube, the True Romance's Sicilian scene with commentary from Tarantino himself. He made mention of a movie called the LongShips about Vikings invading Moor ruled Sicily and guess who stared in the film, Sidney Poitier, I just saw the name of the place in the title of this video and thought hmm what a coincidence there even if Poitiers in this case is a place in France still an interesting connection there.

I agree with you that Charles Martel didn't save Christianity existence. But the world most certainly would have been way different. One thing that comes to mind is would Vladimir the great be able to establish Orthodoxy's strong hold in Eastern Europe.

The Gallo-Romans under Odo/Eudes retreated. The Franks under the Hammer came to their rescue!

Good Job! I'm extra proud of you for managing to not allow yourself to veer off into snide anti-Trump political asides! ;o) Anyway, enough of that...so regarding the Battle of Poitiers it is interesting to note that probably most of us today know this battle better as the Battle of Tours. Good stuff!
