"Certified Pre Owned" just means that the dealership Certifies that someone owned it already....

Certified used cars usually means it's been serviced at the dealer during the early years/miles of the car. Yes expensive but usually a very good conditioned vehicle.

My “certified pre owned” 4Runner was apparently completely serviced before being sold...turns out all 4 brake rotors were warped

I had worked for a Honda dealer in Orlando. All of our "certified pre-owned" vehicles had a complete check of all systems. Not every car met the criteria. Also, with Honda, a certified pre-owned car gets an extended powertrain warranty up to 100, 000 miles!

I'm lucky to be here in japan. Used cars here feels like brand new! I just bought a 2009 fit rs 86k km, new tires, brakes, fluids, 2yr inspection certified, super cleaned inside and buffed outside, 1yr warranty!

At the dealership where I used to work there was a older technician whos only job was certifying used cars for their certified used vehicles, providing services, oil changes other repairs so its not always a scam.

I used to work for a company that create the automotive newspaper ads for dealers who advertised in the LA Times and the Daily News. One of the local Toyota dealer would always tell us, if they are low on Certified cars in their ad, just pick a Toyota that's not certified and put the certified label on it as long as it's within a certain age.

Scotty: Lexus certified vehicles are less than 7 years old with less than 70k miles. clean Carfax only. They pay for the next four services. They undergo a 161 point inspection. They also come with a 2 yr UNLIMITED MILE WARRANTY - comprehensive...which can be extended an additional 5 years. L certified is a great way to go if you want a Lexus.

I've had very good experiences with CPO cars. I've actually bought two. One, a Honda Accord, which extended power train and non power train warranties. It turned out to be a great buy, plus I negotiated the price down. Same with a Nissan Maxima I currently own. I negotiated price down, got them to change a few things I noticed, but got an extended warranty on my car through the manufacturer.

I disagree that CPO is just a gimmick. Just like any used car, you have to do your due diligence and be ready to negotiate. You can negotiate down the price of a CPO car.
