Range Rovers are like strippers. There great to look at but I wouldn’t want to take one home with me in fear of putting more money into it.

As Jeremy Clarkson said "saying it was made in England is just a fancy way of saying the doors are gonna fall off" 😂😂😂

Range Rover owner for almost 9 years here. I will give you the best advice in yr life. DON'T. As I am typing this. The car is in the shop. The mechanic still hasn't found the problem yet. Other Machanic advice me, pls sell it and get a Land Cruiser he's sick of fixing it.

Having a shop that dealt only in British vehicles, I say DO NOT, I repeat, do not ever buy a Land Rover Discovery. The last, in a long line of people that asked my advice on buying a Discovery, said he found a really beautiful one, owned by a little old lady and she only wanted $2, 500 for it. I told him (see above). The next time I saw him he was driving the thing and I asked WHY? He replied, "It's so beautiful". A year later he called me up and wanted to sell it for $500. Of course it was no longer running. There are a lot of low mileage Discovery's and that's because they are always broken down and way too expensive to fix. If you really must have one, take the short cut, just buy a $500 broken down one, put it in your driveway and go sit in it once in a while. Then sell it to the next fool that must have one for $500. You can say you owned one and broke even when you sold it. They constantly break down, very difficult to work on and the parts are astronomically expensive.

Good old scotty couldn't be more right!! PRAY A LOT!!

I'm a D2 owner myself and I have some advice to all new D1/D2 owners if you do not know the service history from past ownerships: Change all fluids ASAP, along with having all sort of hoses and extra parts because they will break, there's tons of info Online on how to get them done yourself; also check for wear in the front driveshaft U-Joint, not funny when those things break; flush brakes, power steering and ACE if equipped. make sure no air is trapped in cooling system and you should be good to go.

I've owned 5 Rovers in the last 25 years. I maintained them myself. 4 of them were very reliable. 1 had been neglected by previous owner. The older Range Rovers and Discovery models were very easy to work on. Most problems were from lack of maintenance. The 1st generation LR3 and Range Rover Sport were excellent. I wonder how many of these comments are from people that haven't owned one, or solely relied on the dealer for maintenance and repairs. That would be very costly. People love to act like a Toyota Land Cruiser will never need any repairs. Show me an old Land Cruiser that has had no parts replaced. If it hasn't, it's probably in a junk yard. All cars require maintenance. Some more than others, but that doesn't make them bad cars. Nearly all European cars are more expensive to maintain. That's common knowledge.

As someone who has owned 2 Land Rovers, I can say Scotty is spot on. One was bought back under lemon law and I offloaded the second one when everything in the world started leaking and the brakes started losing pressure. They are gorgeous, but never again will a British vehicle sit in my driveway.

I'm a former transmission shop owner, and of all vehicles I hated to work on, Land Rover was the absolute worst. The parts availability was the least and the most expensive, (even more expensive than Mercedes) and the manufacturer was the least helpful. Now, I'm going back 10 years, so I don't know how they are now. On one occasion, I had a Freelander with what I believe was a faulty TCS, and at that time the manufacturer would not supply one, unless I buy a whole new unit for over 5 grand, (my cost!) Luckily, I found a wrecked car in time to take the part from that vehicle. The customer was so happy over the money I saved him, he called the manufacturer and told them. Could you believe the nerve of these people? They actually called me and demanded to know where I got the part from!

I drive an 01 discovery and I love it. It's had its problems here and there but never anything I couldn't fix myself.

Fortunately for us Land Rover lovers, the resale value of these cars are good in the sense of being cheaper than say a Yukon, Tahoe, or Escalade which are really at the top of the reliability scale.
But once you understand Land Rovers, and are fairly good with tools, they are great to own.

I think the giant "DON'T" in red on the thumbnail is summary enough. Land Rover - DON'T! XD
