Millions of people suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These people struggle with miserable, often disabling symptoms like bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and pain. IBS can be caused by a range of factors, including food allergies, overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine (SIBO), a lack of digestive enzymes, parasites living in the gut, zinc or magnesium deficiency, and heavy metal toxicity. That’s why it is so critically important to personalize treatment based on the unique circumstances that exist for each person who suffers from IBS. ⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the numerous underlying issues that can contribute to IBS, what type of testing they conduct when working with patients experiencing IBS, and much more. ⁣

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣

I am an IBS sufferer. It has gotten so bad that I have contemplated disability. I am starting to document my chronic pain journey on my channel because of the lack of care from several GI doctors. Also to show people that this is a real disease that causes extreme pain. My GI doctor will send me to the ER for morphine in a heartbeat. It never occurs to him to figure out what's wrong with me. Thats not the ER's job. I've encountered so many unprofessional GI doctors that I'm doubting they had the same core medical trainings as my GP. I find it hard to believe they even went to med school. Its like they are on another planet. I will seek out functional medicine. Thanks for this video.

What doctors tell you is not worth the price of the office call. You leave feeling more hopeless and helpless than when you went in. It takes great effort and suffering on the part of the patient to even get there in the first place and sit and wait to see a doctor. Then they want you to have to show up for a bunch of tests. They truly don't understand the stress and anxiety involved in this.

I asked my gastrologist about food and nutrition. He said nutrition has nothing to do with health. I think he noticed the confused shock in my face lol

Had ongoing SIBO, IBS-D, lactose intolerance and multiple episodes of diverticulitis for many years. Totally cured with good quality multi strain probiotics, Saccharomyces boulardii and peppermint gel caps. It took 3 months but situation is totally reversed.

Since I've suffered from IBS for 50 years I find that this podcast is very informative. This encourages me to continue to see my Functional Medicine doctor and to take the Sebo and stool test kits that I have been given when I last saw my doctor.

I finally found out in my 20’s that I had severe endometriosis. My first doctor, as a teenager, told my mom it was all in my head and I didn’t seek additional medical treatment for several years in which I lived in misery. Keep searching if you don’t get an answer the first time.

My gastro Dr said no cure or fix. Endoscopy, colonoscopy, 6 horse pills a day. See you in 12 months. I've been battling this for 15 years. Just started 1 day after talking a huge dose of antibiotics. This has been very helpful. I'm learning more from yt than my Dr ever told me

I’ve been dealing with chronic IBS-D for about 6 years now after my IBS diagnosis 10 years ago. I’ve been to so many functional med docs and spent thousands of dollars on supplements that don’t fix anything! I am very interested in what your clinic could do to help my situation. It is also gotten to the point of being disabled because I cannot leave my house many days. Thank you! 🙏🏻

When my father passed I was in a state of grief for months. That's when I noticed a change in my digestive system. The doctor told me that I may have ibs. I stressed the heck out of myself. Long term Grief/depression/Anxiety makes you sick. I really desire to heal not just fix the symptoms.

This episode really hits home for me. I’ve 45 years old and have struggled with gut problems for many many years. I’ve lost all my teeth and had to have full dental implants. Also have had psoriasis and IBS for as long as I can remember. Now I have psoriatic arthritis and degenerative disc disease and I struggle on a daily basis. I’m really at my wits end but hope to find a solution soon. I just went to the doctor yesterday to review the MRI results for my neck and back pain I’ve been having and the results were just awful. I don’t even know what to do but this video has given me some starting points at least. Thank you

I'm so in love with Dr Lepine. He's my favourite of all the doctors seen in these series.

Psyllium husk (not powder which does not work as well) can help relieve both constipation and diarrhea, and is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and other intestinal problems. Psyllium has also been used to help regulate blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
Psyllium can also be used to help relieve mild-to-moderate diarrhea. It soaks up a significant amount of water in the digestive tract, making stool firmer and slower to pass.
Recommended dosage is 1 or 2 tablespoonfuls taken first thing in the morning and again around 2pm or 3pm. Take it every day to get relief. This helps many people.

Superb to hear this. It is so much true. Am 53 now. When I was in my early twenties, regular doctors didn’t know how to handle this. So big thanks for this excellent information 🙏🌟

I have had so many stomach problems that started in 9th grade and progressively got worse and worse through high school to the point that I would use the bathroom upwards of 10 times every morning. My stomach would cramp so bad I would get tunnel vision. After many years of going to the doctor and getting zero results, I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! I was able to narrow it down to it being a direct result of metal from my retainers. In 9th grade, I had my braces put on. Seems that my body had a sensitivity to metal and it just got progressively worse with time. I only figured it out because I had forgot my retainers on a camping trip and seemed to be completely fine during my time camping! In the past 10 years, I have also narrowed down other stomach sensitivities and I can work and live a life like a normal person now. I pray this helps someone because I wish I could relive my high school years. I did have strep about 6 times a year between age 6 and 10 when I moved to AK. I do use probiotics often and they are heaven sent.

So everyone I talked said drink more water, it's your even my own family. My family are not doctors and the doctors I saw just brushed it off. So this video is a breath of fresh air.

I was one of the first patients on Accutane in my midteens, in the mid 80s I did clear up my horrible acne, but I ended up with a gift prize called IBS for the rest of my life.

Great show. 67 years old suffering from IBS C since j&j shot. Would love to go a functional doctor. Problem for me and many is that it's not affordable and our insurance doesn't cover anyone but western medicine. Thank you for the show.

I have suffered from IBS all my life. I discovered the two things that worked for me:
A) I accidentally stopped consumption of wheat in my diet and at least 70 percent of symptoms disappeared within two days. I now have a wheat free diet since over ten years.
B) Pre and Probiotics. I take probiotics for two weeks every now and then which brings immediate relief to my condition.
I should add that I never take antibiotics and generally allopathic medicine which aggravate IBS for sure, and I am also Vegan.
