The ROOT CAUSE Of High Blood Pressure & How To TREAT IT NATURALLY | Dr. Mark Hyman

High blood pressure—medically known as hypertension—affects about 30 percent of adults. Left neglected, it can severely damage your quality of life and set the stage for heart disease, kidney complications, or a stroke. Conventional medicine typically treats hypertension with medications that are generally effective in reducing the risk of these complications. These medications frequently come with unintended side effects, however. The good news is the right foods and nutrients can dramatically lower blood pressure without the high costs and side effects of medications.

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss the driving forces of hypertension and the Functional Medicine approach to treating it.

This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and Athletic Greens.

People often forget about anxiety. I believe that anxiety drives up high blood pressure through the roof!

I’m not overweight, eat well, exercise regularly, just walking ;) no sugar or fat but highly stressed at work and some at home front that can’t be avoided. I quit my job 3 days ago and I’m working on my health. Stress is the biggest factor!

Low potassium is a major cause of high blood pressure. Since the vast majority of people (perhaps all of us) are deficient in this mineral, supplementing is the cheap and easy way to lower your blood pressure. I recently lowered my BP from 166/95 to 131/76 by taking 1000mg of potassium chloride twice a day, and continuing to eat a healthy diet. Yes, I am healthy otherwise, so this one change had a drastic effect of my own blood pressure.

I had 160/100 my whole life. I should be dead by now, I eat only whole plant foods, no salt, and ride a bicycle 2 hours a day. I feel great. My pulse is in the 40's, however by blood pressure rarely drops below 150/90. So, let that sink in. It's genetic

I got off from my blood pressure med for more than 2 months without my doctor's advice. I monitored my bp since I stop my medication and twas very normal ranged from 106-112/70-74. What I did is lifestyle changes, home remedy (raw garlic 2x a day) regular exercise (at least 30 mins brisk walking and intermittent fasting (18-6 3x every week)

Stress is definitely a contributory factor. One way to overcome stress is to play a game in your mind of finding a positive in every situation and finding the positive things in your life. Each time your are worried, fretting, angry or depressed, play this game. Yes there is a positive in each and every situation and all negative things out there in the world that are NOT in your life are also thankfully your positives. So next time you feel low play this game.😃 Another surprising way to lessen stress is to help someone, yet another is to have a hobby

Chronic high BP entire adult life.Im not a big doctor guy so would get it checked very infrequent.Went to the dentist and they wouldn't work on me because my BP was too high.A little later I went to the firehouse to check my BP.It was 170/80, a month later checked again, 180/90.I had a vegan diet for 6 years and never lowered my BP one bit.Stopped vegan diet years ago.So recently started eating a meat diet, carnivore, no fruit, no vegetables at all Meat, butter, eggs and some raw dairy.Within 6 weeks I got my BP checked, 130/70.Several months now and I consistently get normal readings, first time in my adult life.Im 65.

THANK YOU DOC! Finally a doctor who isn’t exclusively blaming salt! When I went low carb, by accident I found out my BP dropped. Within weeks it went from 145/90 to 110/ 70 simply by cutting the carbs/sugar. Great info.

I am taking 3 blood pressure pills a day. My blood pressure cup was telling me I was in hypertensive crisis. when I complained about my pressure to my primary care he told me not to take my pressure until I have had my meds in me for at least 2 hrs. He might as well have slapped me in the face.. Thank the Lord their are alternatives... Thank you for caring and educating us all.

In addition to what was discussed here, regular brisk walks and fasting has really helped my BP.

Around 20% of people with Hypertension have a condition called primary Aldosteronism where the adrenals are inflamed and or have a aldosterone emitting tumour. Excess aldosterone means that the body holds onto salt and dumps potassium. If you are diagnosed then you need to restrict salt intake to 1500mg a day. It is a curable form of high blood pressure with medication and or removal of the affected adrenal. Many people are walking around with this condition - it is diagnosed using a blood test and more precise testing is used to figure out if it is one or both adrenals affected. It would be a good idea to look into this Mark - there needs to be more information on YouTube and other platforms around this condition which used to be once thought of as rare. When this is diagnosed it can add 20 years to someones life. Millions are currently undiagnosed. Thanks

It doesn’t matter what I do, I’m even on BP meds and clean diet and workout a lot. My grandma had it too and we had to take her to the ER all the time when it would get over 200/110 but the crazy part is she lived to be 101. Mine and hers is just naturally high

For me, a whole plant person for 6 years, it comes down to getting exercise. Low impact aerobics, walking and swimming. The diet, by itself, isn't enough.

A very simple way to lower your blood pressure greatly is to eat beets every night before dinner. Try freeze dried beets from Trader Joe’s. I keep over a dozen boxes in the refrigerator and eat one half nightly. It is miraculous.

Blood pressure became more and more of a problem as more and more medications came on the market. The old guidelines were 100 plus your age. So, as you get older acceptable blood pressure can be higher than younger people.
