A bug's life clip.

Story: Flik (Dave Foley) is an inventive ant who's always messing things up for his colony. His latest mishap was destroying the food stores that were supposed to be used to pay off grasshopper Hopper (Kevin Spacey). Now the strong-arming insect is demanding that the ants gather double the food -- or face annihilation. To avert disaster, Flik goes on a journey to recruit fighters to defend the colony. When he meets a band of high-flying circus insects, he thinks he's found his salvation.

Grasshoppers base with the commander and the other grasshoppers.

"What if Hopper doesn't like it?"
"Then at least the genius will get smacked, not us."
And instead all 3 of them get killed

How is no one talking about Hopper's dead-ass, unflinching stare as the grain is pouring? It's so awesome.

Even though Hopper's speech was one of the most serious moments in animation history, I can't stop laughing when he killed those guys with the grain. 🤣

As I kid I never realized that Hopper actually killed those three grasshoppers just to make a point.

I didn't realize how good this movie was as a kid.

I never noticed how Hopped straight-up kills those grasshoppers who opposed him. That's why the grasshopper next to his brother looks so horrified at the end.

That look on Hoppers face when a flake from his brothers shedding falls in front of him. They put so much work into the characteristics.

The scary thing about Hopper's speech is that it applies heavily throughout history. For instance, those in higher positions like classes (such as with feudalism) would try to scare lower ones into submission by brutally punishing anyone who protests.

Of course, when pushed too far, a revolt can ensue, which is what happens in this film.

Interesting layers here: Hopper's not only explaining his philosophy of crushing dissent, he's also acting on it by killing the guys who suggested staying. The grasshoppers stay above the ants, and Hopper stays above the other grasshoppers.

Fun fact: it’s implied on the DVD commentary that the grasshoppers invade the mosquito’s home every summer and force them to serve them.

2:54
That cold stare Hopper gives as he just straight up kills three of his minions has stuck with me for years.

I actually did hopper’s speech (starting from “order another round!”) in acting class for my final monologue in high school. Since I couldn’t use grain, I used napkins and then for the grain pouring down, I just used a prop silver revolver (the one with the orange tip) with blanks. Passed with a cheer from the class.

Hopper knew his brother would never confront him like that without someone egging him on, so he pretends to call off the plan and then subverts it to see who reacts the most strongly.

"Guys! Order another round because we're staying here!!"
That has meme potential right there

"You let one ant stand up to us and they ALL might stand up. Those puny little ants outnumber us a hundred to one. And if they EVER figure that out, there goes our way of LIFE!!"

I love his deadpan expression when all the seeds come out of the dispenser. Kevin Spacey was perfect for this.
