Learn how to rake out cement mortar

Tasked with a roof upheaval and stone conservation work on a fantastic Victorian Scout Hall in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, we set about raking out the cementitious mortar.

The effects of having cement added to a stone structure are worse than you can imagine. ALWAYS consult a STONEMASON when you’re looking to have work done to a traditional build.

Have a watch and see how I mix, rake out and repoint with lime mortar. The aftercare process is essential when it comes to lime, please leave a comment if you’ve any questions.

First of all, thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
It was a 5:2. I used Otterbein NHL 5 (natural hydraulic lime). Leaves a better colour almost a buff as opposed to other limes which show far too white for my liking.

Nice video and great craftmanship, thanks for sharing. Would you be able to please detail what ratio you used for your mortar mix and maybe the products also? Many thanks again.

Hi, you mention adverse effects of cement in stone structure in the description. Could you elaborate on that please as I know little about the topic to understand what they might be.
