The top 1 Linux XFCE4 Theme for BOOMERS (Chicago 95/Windows95 theme)

preview_player
Показать описание
In this video I show you how to install Chicago 95 theme for XFCE 4 on all GNU/Linux distributions. Chicago 95 is a Windows 95 like theme, which transforms the aesthetic of your desktop to that of one used in the mid 90's. Throw in a CRT monitor, a 56k modem with a dial up connection, and some 90's fashion and you've essentially entered a time machine ;)

create a themes and icons folder in your home directory

clone the github repo into your home rolder

create a themes and icons folder in your home directory

mkdir -p ~/.themes

mkdir -p ~/.icons

copy the theme and icon files into place

cp -r Chicago95/Theme/Chicago95/ .themes/

cp -r Chicago95/Icons/* ~/.icons.

Then follow the steps in the video to change your XFCE settings to apply the theme, you may have to re log for all these settings to take effect.

and be sure to click that notification bell so you know when new videos are released. ₿💰💵💲Help Support the Channel by Donating Crypto💲💵💰₿

This has been my xfce4 theme for a while now, good to see it get some love!
Also the new python installer is really nice and fancy. It even has the old Windows Installer theme

It is now a personal goal of mine to build a retro themed PC in one of those Commadore 64 keyboard PC cases that accepts ITX motherboards, slap Linux or Unix (haven't decided yet) on it, and theme it like this, while using a CRT monitor as my display. The feels, man.

Waiting for the Millennium Edition version.

Ah yes, the 90's, when we consumed propietary software, but at least we have a nice memory of what human rights we used to have in these computers.

Nostalgia aside, this kind of themes are still easier to read than both dark mode and those ridiculously bright themes people nowadays use when they don't use dark mode. A Windows 3.11 theme is even better because it uses a darker shade of grey.

Man, I actually didn't want to be crushed by nostalgia in the first 30 seconds of your video.
That being said, thanks for the tip, I'll install that theme right after I opened my first can of Monster for the night.

Is there a theme to get that cool Windows 98 gradient?

Damn the beginning hit me hard. Although I barely had the experience of the early 2000’s and late 90’s I still wanna go back to whatever sliver of joy I had on the internet back then in comparison to the dumpster fire now that modern day society and technology has created now

All you need now is Pale Moon with the Netscape theme!

I used to use fvwm95/98 for similar back in the 90s. It wasn't 'retro' then, it was just emulating MS's then-current look.

heh. Boomer? I was 25 when Win95 came out. This should be "for GenX'ers" as most boomers were afraid of computers until their GenX kids helped them. SMFH .. forgotten again.

I found this after realizing I have no memories of our family owning an XP machine, but do have memories of using 98.
BTW born in 2000.

I already have a nice CRT. Only use it for games, though, because I only have one and it's not a super huge one. Other than my TV, of course. From what I know, there are giant CRTs (specifically TVs that can also be used as VGA monitors, that also have composite, component and maybe RGB) out there that have VGA, and I want to get one or a few eventually. I don't have an old mouse, but I don't like anything with a bunch of buttons, so it's a normal one, and I appreciate the convenience of not having to clean the ball every now and then, so that's fine. There wasn't a beige one, though, so it's gray, which is also fine, better than black. My monitor, headphones and keyboard are beige, though, which is nice. I'm sick of depressing black electronics and fingerprint magnets. I will take black keycaps, though, and long as the keyboard's case is beige or light gray, because I like the contrast, and that's great for ABS caps, because darker colors still look good if they yellow. Even if they get kinda brown, they still look good, while yellowed beige looks like it has been pissed on.

This would pair well with a vaporwave wallpaper, they already copy this aesthetic anyways, many using Win95 logos and wallpapers, just with more purple. I think I will make a setup like that myself. Sounds fun, even if I wasn't born until 97.

I've been getting retro themes lately on Plasma. Trellium is looking good too.

To anyone using this I also recommend the palemoon browser with the Netscape theme for a really authentic look
