XFCE is amazingly customizable and versatile. Sometimes I actually do enjoy the "good ole Windows 95" look. At times though I made it look like Ubuntu's Unity, MacOS, Windows 11 and sometimes quite unique in its own right. Of course super light weight and easy on your system ressources at all times! 😎

Just searched "How to customize XFCE" on YouTube and I saw a new video of Matt published 2 hours ago. What a day! 😁♥️

XFCE is without doubt the most usable DE for me. So stable, so snappy, versatile and effortless to swap out xfwm for i3 or your window manager of choice

I recently switched to Qtile with XFCE tools in the back and therefore love your investigation into XFCE. 🙂 It's 45 minutes long. This one will be good.

I have been using Linux Mint Xfce for a few years, the thing I love the most is, its fast compared to other DEs. It is also the best for gaming, Xfce can't be Beat. Faster smoother, quicker transitions, very stable.

How timely!

I’m taking a course on Linux. We have installed Ubuntu on our machines. I don’t know which desktop environment Ubuntu natively comes with; but from the professor’s supplemental instructions, we’ll be installing XFCE.

Thanks!

Great, great tutorial. This basically sums up everything you need to know to start ricing XFCE. I just recently found out about the ~/.themes and ~/.icons folders. I always put everything into /usr/share. Also as someone who usually doesn't rice too much, I didn't know about gpick yet. Nice little program.

for some reason .xfce4-panel applies the border radius to ALL plugins on the panel. e.g. the battery icon has a opaque circle around it and a transparent square around that with a 13px radius, showing the desktop underneath. I added 0px;} to fix this

Nice tips, the problem I have with the rounded corners is they aren't truly transparent and just take the closest colour from the background. Backgrounds with more variation or in my case, a panel floating over the title bar, then the rounded corners look out of place.

I've been eagerly awaiting this video.

For people who want to use XFCE and use MPD i also recommend the xfce4-mpc-plugin for the panel, it is really good. And it is in the Fedora repos.

im willing to switch to xfce when they add wayland support
not sooner.
but if i were to use it, i would replace the xfce compositer with picom, with gives some nice options, and reduces screen tearing, and replace xfwm with kwin, or even i3.
necessary? no, why?, just because i can, and that is the whole point of linux, use it, customize it, adapt it to YOUR needs.

A brighter wallpaper would have been good for better contrast with the panel.
I don't use Xfce but still watched the whole video to learn some things. Actually pretty cool what you can do with CSS in Xfce

Matt, it's called deprecated; it looks kind of like depreciated, but deprecated has a hard 'c' sound.
