Two helpful knowledge bases for understanding Scripture:
1. The historical setting and cultural context in which it was written
2. The historical settings and cultural contexts in which past faithful thinkers and teachers have interpreted it

Lastly, understand that the truth to too "big" for any one man to understand. If it was meant to be only simple and straightforward with no room or need for discussion, God would have given us a bullet list, not the Bible.

If the individual cannot be trusted to interpret the scriptures with full accuracy how does later church history or community solve the problem? How do you know who has the correct interpretation? Is it by majority consensus? Authority? Are not you still using your own interpretations to access the validity of others.. The reformation is the inevitable conclusion once christians deny papal authority. As you stated, Luther brought his own issues of interpretation like questioning James and Revelation. Luther and Calvin were obviously heavily indebted to Augustine yet many Christians reject large portions of Augustine's interpretation of scripture This is a problem without a solution for the christian, unless one can prove direct revelation from their god.

You are objecting to Solo Scriptura, not Sola Scriptura. Solo is the "me and my Bible and nothing else" position. I agree that often Christians take Sola and turn it into Solo.
