Hill Start Assist Explained-Modern Manual Cars

In this video, I talk to you about hill start assist. It is an option that is available on many modern cars with manual transmissions, and basically prevents the car from rolling back when it is on a hill. Anyone that knows how to drive a manual car will tell you that hill starts were definitely the hardest to master (and the scariest part of learning to drive a stick shift)!

This is a great feature for new manual transmission drivers. I can imagine even more so for even seasoned drivers who live in crazy places like San Francisco where the inclines of the streets built on hills are CRAZY! No fears, however, once you learn how a manual works and you learn it on “your” car, you won’t need this assistance anymore. Twenty years of manual transmission car driving here, from Mazdas (what I learned on), to BMW’s, Mustangs, etc. Whether it’s city streets, highways across the country, to out in the good ol’ rural lands of the country side. I’ve been rolling across them all, enjoying the road, inclinations of all types, even when the jerk behind me is LITERALLY on my a**….I make “them” back up- slow slide for a nano-second with foot off brake in neutral, shake them OUT of their “inconsideration”, then inch right back up. It’s lovely as you see them get the message. But PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS WITHOUT SOLID, LONGSTANDING EXPERIENCE where not only do you know “your” car, how to handle it with mastery, and making sure you have your auto insurance INTACT (for “just in case” all your consistent high maintenance still meets what should’ve been an unusual fail, the reason why they’re called accidents). I am fortunate to have never, ever had such an accident. I sincerely believe it’s because I had to master this skill quickly, I began driving manuals that did not have auto-assist, I had no choice.😮

And we all are waiting and waiting and waiting for the dramatic moment and it never came. Are you sir planing season 2 of the "hill start assist " saga ? May I suggest the rugged hilly area of Rogers/Blackthorn to test the modern technological capabilities of the very cool Jeep Wrangler ?

Hey y'all. I've never had an assist on a car until now. I'm about to change my brake pads for the first time. Is there anything extra I need to do?

About to buy my first manual car so I've been doing some research - with that in mind I have a question, when does the hill assist actually disengage? Is it when the car realizes it's moving forward or the second you start applying some gas pedal? I'm a noob and just want to understand.

Or u just take ur foot off brake and press the gas hill assist is terrible caused me to stall car there is nothing more embarrassing than that. Practice on hills in low traffic areas or driveways if possible.

I bought a newer "pre-owned" car that was the top model of its line. It has a hill holder function and I hate it. It's like a standard transmission for idiots. 1:30 The "old school" way of preventing the car from rolling back, is knowing how to drive a stick. I never used the parking brake, in fact, I've never even heard about it until I started watching these videos.
