I have battled with this for a long time, being a single parent of 2 kids. I do give to whoever the Holy Spirit brings to my attention.

Did you know that, concerning giving, or tithing, or prosperity, Malachi 3:8-12 is not the full counsel of God? It is an excerpt, quoted to the church for centuries (believe it or not), which is a misrepresentation of God's counsel. We've accepted it because that's what we have always been taught. Here are a few points to consider.

-- Who did God appoint to receive tithes? God said, "And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth [the tithe] in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation (Numbers 18:21-23). In this scripture, God established who receives the tithe (the Levites), and why they received it (they received no inheritance, and they served in the temple). This assignment is exclusive to Levites. A pastor cannot assume this assignment, he has never been scripturally assigned by God to collect tithes, he is not a Levite. In that same sense, only a Levite, never a pastor, could ever serve in a Jewish temple. The church has not replaced the Jewish temple, and pastors have not replaced Levites.

-- People are blessed when they give, not because of Malachi 3, which is based on the Law of Moses, an Old Testament law that has been replaced by Grace under Christ, at the cross. They are blessed because Jesus said, "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you" (Luke 6:38). It is this principle of giving and receiving at work, when we give and are blessed. Not the expired law of tithing, which was required of the Jews (never Gentiles), and could only be received by Levite priests because they received no inheritance and were set apart to work fully in the Jewish temple.

-- There is much more to this, such as Abraham's tithe to Melchizedek, Jacob's promise to tithe, the history of when and why the New Testament church tithes (there is actually a date!), and the scriptures that speak to these issues. To be clear, every pastor has a right to collect offerings in support of the ministry; I fully agree with supporting the church financially. But our giving must be godly. It is wrong to require people to tithe, contrary to the scriptures, then say that we live according to the scriptures.

Four biblical truths, regarding tithing:
(1) There is no scripture that authorizes anyone but a Levite to receive tithes.
(2) There is no scripture that authorizes a pastor to receive tithes.
(3) There is no scripture that requires a Gentile to tithe.
(4) There is no scripture that requires the church to tithe.

That’s why I don’t let no one know where I work. If they ask me I tell them “I’m just busy enjoying life” cuz they will size you up financially right after you tell them where you work cuz they will expect lots of $$$$ from you. If God puts it in you to tithe, then that’s different but God also will let you know if no don’t tithe cuz they just taking advantage of people. Church these days take advantage of people. Some of these pastors are living better lives than those who they expect to give them if they need then they should be making good decisions and not buying crazy expensive houses and cars and instead live ion a budget and use money that’s left from not buying a crazy expensive house and cars and instead use it for the church.

Agree so many folks don’t go to church because they feel they have to tithe

the sacrifice of giving tithes and offering is also testing your heart because the Lord wants to put our trust in him and not in money. Where is your heart when it comes to your money? Years ago there was a time I was giving my tithes and offering Faithfully.. and I did it on all my increase I was struggling with having gas to get back and forth to church and everywhere else.. this went on for a few years one day the Holy Spirit told me I would never have to worry about gas again.. that was about eight years ago and God has been true to his word. Praise the Lord!!!

1 Corinthians 16:2. Lay aside and store it up as he may prosper. When we make money the first thought should be to set aside as we prosper for the Lord!!! He himself doesn’t need our money but it sure helps to spread the Gospel of Christ in this fallen world that we live in.

Our pastor only asked for a 500 dollar a month salary. The rest went to the church to help with costs and help people in the church.

Your giving tithes...and offering unto the Lord...yes, both are a blessing to support your ministry ..but it's also a blessing to you when God sees your faithful sacrifice. The Holy Spirit has never led me wrong. I would never stop giving tithes and offering my life has been truly blessed because of it.

The new testament says to be a cheerful giver. Tithing was never about monetary. But for those that feel good giving 10% of their salary and can afford to do so, that's great. I'm sure your pastor is very happy and appreciates you.

I had problems with this for a while! I’ve come to see, large Churches are insistent on getting monthly money, from members. Cars, clothes, jewelry, a prestigious way of life, with less Jesus in their examples! I do realize without giving, Jesus wouldn’t be as known as he is. We have to give words for the Holy Spirit to have access to the world! Making a living off the Church is why Jesus overturned tables! The continuing to ask for money in every service for the Pastors “pocket change” isn’t right! I give what God leads me! Tithing is Old Testament, giving is New Testament! I give what I’m lead to!

Malachi 3:6-13 speaks of robbing God by not giving our full tithe (tithe referring to a 10th) so i believe scripture does make it clear that tithing is something we need to do.

I use to get emotionally beat down at the ministry I use to attend before moving out of state. It's pitiful so many ministries use guilt tactics to get money

You pay 10%=on every dollar that comes in to your house !! Remember that is not your money it is God, s he lets you be a stewart of it !! You would not even have it if He would not have given to you !! And the bible says we are to support the people who make their living from the gospel, just like the people supported the Levites !!

Tithing is an offering to God. When we were an agricultural system, we tithe by first fruits of crops, or first born of herd. Now we're in a monetary system, so we unfortunately switch how we tithe. The church should be using those tithing to help members and others. Am i mistaken that scripture changes that?

You said it's not a moral obligation to return tithe and you cited 1 Cor 9:9 but just a few verses later Paul cites the tithing model and says "in the same way" this is commanded by the Lord for the gospel. If it's not an obligation then why is it commanded by the Lord?

Tithing is an issue of the heart, not an issue of money. It's also an act of Worship & clearly reveals what people really worship more or most. That's what makes it so wonderful to those who can catch it...
