Sadly, we are living in a truly narcissistic society today. Difficult to get through some days. I do believe we are in the last days and the fulfillment of "lovers of selves" has been fulfilled.

it doesn't mean you cannot defend yourself and be someone's doormat. However, we should not go one the same level as the person who sins against us.

Do not trade insult for insult. Be the bigger man

Phil Robertson gave a good story about turning the other cheek. He said, ppl kept stealing his fish, and that he actually caught a couple young men in the act. He explained to them that those fish were his way of feeding his family.. but he allowed the boys to keep the fish, and even helped them in getting the fish out of his net.. He said.. Before long, I noticed no one was stealing my fish anymore.

People need to use common sense. If someone is beating your Wife up and you stand there “turning the other cheek” I don’t think you are following God. As a man you have a duty to protect your family from harm.

To give them another chance. Just like Jesus gave us another chance and allowed us to be saved from our sin.

Don't trade insult for insult. He did not say to let a bully beat you to a pulp.

Forgive your enemies and be slow to anger.

Thank you for the clarification on this passage. It has troubled me since I was young; now I am 55 and still trying to keep my reactions in check when criticized or ridiculed. Both of these happen frequently at my current place of employment, so please pray for me to have compassion and forgiveness towards the people who do this. We all need God's love and forgiveness, and none of us deserve it.

An Irish priest once told me “Jesus said to turn the other cheek but He didn’t say what to do after that.”

Even when Jesus let Himself be mistreated, He stood up for Himself and pointed out the wrong:

"Jesus answered him, 'If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?'" (Jn 18:23)

Stand up for yourself, but be a person characterized by Christlike mercy and forgiveness.

Slow to anger (Jam. 1:19).

Not reviling in return (1 Pet. 2:23).

Enabling abuse is not okay, including when the victim is yourself.

A very good explanation and reminder. If Jesus can forgive then so can we. He is magnificent. Hallelujah 😊✝️🙌💕

It’s to plant a seed in the attacker. Everyone else would fight back somehow. Especially when they lose if we don’t strike them back, it plants a spiritual seed.

I love the point about striving for peace in the Holy Spirit and not gratify the sinful flesh!

Our sinful nature is one of rebellion. Turning the other cheek is only possible with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Turning the other cheek is a little easier when offended by the lost world. When it comes from people in your church that claim to be followers of Christ it somewhat harder. You expect better from them. We attend a church where some people are loving and kind but some are just down right snotty. They treat you as if are less than them. We had a young woman who appeared to had suffered a hard life come to our church who made a profession of faith and joined our membership. My wife and I made a point to speak to her every Sunday but the earlier mentioned people never accepted her. She left the church shortly thereafter. My wife has suffered because of a church gossip. She did as the word and kindly confronted her. She acknowledged what she did but never apologized. We are running out of cheeks.

Turning the other cheek has to do with not being easily provoked into violence. Similar to when someone is challenging another to a duel with a sword or pistol. If a person is not in physical danger, then avoid violence by walking away. However, if there is the threat of violence and being harmed, or the need for actual justice, this a totally different situation.

Most people focus on Matthew 5:39b about cheek turning while ignoring Matthew 5:39a about not resisting, so I found this refreshing, thank you.
