Apple's M Chips: Explained

preview_player
Показать описание
Over the past two years, Apple has completely transformed their Mac lineup. By moving away from Intel and adopting their own homegrown chips instead. This has allowed Apple to become even more aggressive with their computer’s designs and performance, but things have gotten a little confusing along the way. From the M1, to the M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, and even M2, it’s become difficult to differentiate one from the other. So let’s sort it all out, starting with the M1.

Cool thing that the chips line up is thought out like an iPhone series code.

The craziest thing to me is that the freaking iPad Air has an M1 now! I got it and it’s a total beast for it’s size!

I love these short, well explained, well animated videos. They help me understand Apple products so much more.

It is very interesting to see the transformation and the overall development of the process of the chips to be redefined and how it is today with the new lineup of macs

The M2 is using a different microarchitecture (i.e. CPU core) than the M1. The M1 is using the same type of cores as the A14 (found in the iPhone 12), whereas the M2 is using the same type of cores as found in the A15 (found in the iPhone 13 and 14). There is no M variant yet of the A16 (found in the iPhone 14 Pro)

Thanks for the video! The naming of M-series chips is really a bit misleading, pushing consumers towards an assumption that M2 is better than any M1 out there.
Speaking of chips, I'm on M1 with MacBook Air and Mac mini, thinking of switching to M1 Pro instead of buying the new M2 Air, which is less powerful, and quite expensive with a config similar to MacBook Pro with M1 Pro.

Love this explanation. I was worried at first about the M1 Pro I'd had for only two months when the M2 was announced- I feel a lot better now knowing that I still got the best chip I could get for what I do (virtual computing/network labs/etc.)

How is the any more confusing than anything intel or amd has on the market? M1 is the generation, the latter word is the performance gradient of that generation.

I'm curious whether M2 Pro will be more powerful than M1 Max!

And also the M1s are in the iPads. Tho those devices need more software and hardware updates to utilize those more
Specifically so then it can be like some cheaper alternative to the more complex Mac systems

That makes sense. If you were in the market for a new Mac computer, would you go with the M1 chip or go with the M2 chip?

M2 contains some bug fixes for the M1 chip and improved power performance

I remember when Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel because of similar heat and power issues… hopefully the ARM chips have solved this for a long time.
