I find that a lot (if not all) of these "Nice Guys Finish Last" songs are disguised narcissism.

That's a lot of I's and me's in songs like this.

the way charlie was talking about that experience with whatever women he's referring to is so ridiculous and also exemplifies the core problem with the "i'm a nice guy" philosophy. they are all SO caught up in trying to fuck that they literally don't even realize it when a woman is genuinely trying to connect with them on an emotional level. "sleeping over" with "nothing happening" "so many times" means she actually likes you as a PERSON. she CARES about you. she TRUSTS you. she is trying to get to know you better and be your friend and connect on an emotional level. first of all, these are the foundations of healthy relationships, especially ones that last for a long time. second of all, even if she is not actually interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with you, a woman who is acting like this can turn into a genuine friend you can turn to in times of need and enjoy spending time with doing low-key stuff. either way, actually respecting the woman in these situations is what is going to improve your life. they are going to become your friends and possibly a girlfriend. not just someone you hook up with. but charlie puth is too busy trying to fuck to form a genuine connection and when someone apparently tried to do that with him he saw it as getting snubbed from a hook up.

Enrique Iglesias’s Hero (2001) and some other songs should be included, my God how self aggrandizing, overly dramatic and grating, about how he can be the hero and kiss away the pain. Pair it with his songs “Escape” (2002) about how the woman can run, she can hide but she can’t escape his love literally in the chorus, all made up to seem all cute but the creepy keeps showing up. And last but not least “Love to see you cry” (2002), he does not know why but he loves to see her cry, as he is clearly singing about inflicting emotional pain and abuse, released after “Hero”. All of these are tracks on his album “Escape”, but usually it evades criticism about being a creepy nice guy incel because only “Hero” and “Escape” had airplay in the USA, while “Love to see you cry” was limited to Europe.

I HATED that one direction song. I would turn the radio every time it came on, and I was THEE target audience. Why do people want little girls to be insecure so badly that they write a song for a boy band to sing to praise them for it? I’ve always been naturally very self-assured (thank God), and it just rubbed me the wrong way, even as a preteen.
